England fans have launched a full scale invasion of Miami and even received the backing of the local Marlins baseball team.
So many Three Lions supporters went to watch the game last night that the official drummer bellowed to the crowd: “Let’s go England”. He broke with protocol to give his support to the Three Lions World Cup dream and as he banged his drum he was applauded by England fans.
There was a carnival atmosphere at the game with hundreds of England supporters mixing with Norway fans. At one stage Norway fans took part in their famous “row” with the Marlins mascots.
Noah Sarles, 23, from Great Hallingbury, Essex, said: “It was a lovely touch for the official drummer to chant ‘Let’s go England’
“There were quite a lot of England fans in the stadium. They appreciated it. And the Marlins won - let’s hope there’s a similar victory for England."
There was a party vibe across the city as both sets of fans happily mixed ahead of the World Cup quarter final in Miami stadium.
There were dozens of Brazil fans around as well. The Mirror spoke to one family who had flown in from São Paulo overnight. They declined to give their names but the mum said sadly: “We booked this months ago expecting Brazil to be in quarter final. It has cost us a lot of money but we decided to come anyway.”
It will be searingly hot with temperatures expected to reach nearly 40 degrees at kick off time in a stadium which does not have a roof.
There are still predicted thunderstorms which could affect the game. But Fifa bosses are praying there won’t be a repeat of last weekend when the match against Mexico was forced to kick off an hour late.
The Miami authorities have set up special hydration stations across the to make sure fans have access to water.
England superfan Gary Taylor, 64, and his girlfriend Jo Lewis, 44, flew into Miami last night.
They have been to every game so far. They has a few days relaxing in Cancun between the Mexico and Norway games. Gary said: “This is such a fantastic opportunity. Norway are a good side but playing them in a World Cup quarter final instead of Brazil is a dream.
“Let’s hope we play well and win and get to the semi final. Harry Kane versus Erling Haaland - the clash of two classic centre forwards.”
David Beckham is in town and expected to attend the game. After the match England will immediately fly back to their Kansas City base whether they win or lose.
If defeated they are set to fly back to London on Sunday. Win and they will be back in Atlanta, where they beat the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 in the round of 32, for the semi final on Wednesday.
