WhatsApp is finally introducing one of its most requested features: usernames.

The messaging platform has begun rolling out username reservations ahead of a wider launch later this year. Once the feature goes live, users will be able to chat without sharing their phone numbers, marking one of the biggest privacy updates in WhatsApp's history.

The announcement comes around the same time that Kunal Shah has been named WhatsApp's new Global Head, as the platform continues to expand its user base while introducing new ways for people to connect more privately.

For years, WhatsApp has used phone numbers as the only way to identify users. While that has kept the platform simple, it has also meant sharing a personal number with anyone you wanted to message, whether it was someone you met at an event, a community group, or even a local business.

That is about to change.

How to Reserve Your WhatsApp Username

WhatsApp has opened username reservations before the feature officially launches later this year, giving users a chance to secure the username they want.

To reserve one:

• Update WhatsApp to the latest version.
• Open Settings.
• Go to Account.
• Tap Username.
• Choose and reserve your preferred username.

With more than three billion users on the platform, WhatsApp says it is allowing reservations early to give people a fair chance at securing their preferred username before the full rollout.

How WhatsApp Usernames Will Work

Unlike many social media platforms, WhatsApp is taking a privacy-first approach.

There will be no public username directory or search page. Instead, someone will need to know your exact username before they can start a conversation with you. The company is also introducing an optional username key that adds another layer of control over who can message you.

Once usernames are available globally, users who choose to enable the feature will be able to start new conversations without revealing their phone numbers. Instead, their username will be displayed during first-time chats.

A Feature for Businesses and Creators Too

WhatsApp is also extending the feature to businesses, creators, and organisations. Those with an existing Instagram or Facebook username will be able to claim the same identity on WhatsApp, making it easier to maintain a consistent presence across Meta's platforms.

The introduction of usernames represents a notable shift in how identity works on WhatsApp. The platform has steadily added privacy-focused features over the past few years, including disappearing messages, Chat Lock, and passkeys. Usernames continue that trend by reducing the need to share a personal phone number just to start a conversation.

The wider rollout of WhatsApp usernames is expected later this year, with reservations now open for eligible users.
