The budget retailer increased the cost last month

Two supermarkets have hiked the price of an essential item in this week's price comparison. Following the increase in the cost of chicken breasts at Aldi last month, from £2.19 for a 300g pack to £2.29, Lidl has now followed suit.

And Morrisons, where a 330g was previously £2.41, is now up to £2.52, which equates to the same £2.29 for 300g. It's now the same price at most of the big six supermarkets, except for Tesco and Sainsbury's, where it works out at £2.34.

Despite the increase, Lidl, with a bill of £13.32, remains the cheapest in our comparison, which tracks the price of eight items including bread, butter, beans, milk, tea bags, coffee, chicken and beef mince.

When we first started tracking prices back in March 2022, the same size pack of chicken breasts was just £1.79 at Lidl and Aldi.

At £13.75, Tesco is the most expensive supermarket for a fifth week running and Sainsbury's - which had previously been the most expensive - is cheaper still (£13.57) after we took into consideration its cheaper 25% fat beef mince, which is Aldi price matched to £3.09.

Previously it only sold a 20% fat version for £3.25 - the same as Tesco - but we've always included the cheapest items available at each store. This includes the retailers' budget ranges such as Sainsbury's Stamford Street, Asda's Just Essentials, Tesco's Stockwell products and Morrisons' Savers.

Aldi is just a penny more than Lidl at £13.33, followed by Asda at £13.34, Morrisons at £13.53 and Sainsbury's at £13.57.

Not all retailers agree with our findings. Aldi has always argued that the products aren't like-for-like, saying its own Diplomat Red Label tea bags and its coffee are of 'higher quality' than the comparative products used and its tins of beans are heavier than some of the other retailers'.

An Aldi spokesperson told the M.E.N: “Our customers know they can always count on us for great value across the board, without needing to join a club or show a loyalty card. That’s why Which? has named us Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for five years running.”

Morrisons says it 'remains committed to providing good, honest value' and is 'working hard to keep prices down and competitive so customers can spend less while still enjoying the quality Morrisons is famous for'.

A spokesperson said: "In addition, our More Card members can earn Five More Points on every product in store, online and in Morrisons Daily stores and also benefit from personalised offers and money-off coupons on the things they buy the most of."

Sainsbury's also says the 'review of a limited number of products does not reflect the fantastic value' customers will find in store and says it's 'committed to offering customers great choice and value when they shop with us'.

A spokesperson for Asda said: "Asda is delivering unbeatable value on the products families buy most, from everyday essentials to the big brands they know and love.

"With thousands of products already cheaper than Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s, including their loyalty card prices, independent surveys consistently recognise Asda as the best-value full-range supermarket, with low prices available to all."
