It's been crowned champion in the Which? taste test

With temperatures on the rise we'll all be looking for ways to keep cool and that means we might be reaching for the freezer.

Ice cream sales unsurprisingly rocket at times like this and consumer watchdog Which? has been taste testing some luxury tubs.

What you probably wouldn't expect is that budget brand Aldi took the top spot ahead of big brands including Häagen-Dazs and Jude's.

Even luxury brands from the main supermarkets including Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference, Morrisons The Best and Tesco’s Finest ranked lower than the retailer.

Aldi’s Specially Selected Madagascan Vanilla Ice Cream (£2.69, 480ml) didn't just win over the experts on taste – it also walked away with both the prestigious ‘Best Buy’ and ‘Great Value’ accolades.

Aldi bosses say securing the double win 'proves that ice cream lovers don’t need to pay parlour prices for premium quality this summer' as its winning scoop is less than half the price of the lower scoring Häagen-Dazs alternative (£5.75, 460ml) and bigger too.

It also beat pricier options from Yeo Valley (£4.75), Jude’s (£5), Waitrose (£4.50) and Tesco (£3.50) to take the top spot.

The Which? taste test, which blind-tests products using a rigorous panel of experts and consumers, praised Aldi's Specially Selected Madagascan Vanilla Ice Cream for its ‘just right’ strength of vanilla flavour and perfectly creamy texture.

Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, said: “In this sunny spell, there’s no better time for shoppers to discover the best summer staples. Our Specially Selected Madagascan Vanilla Ice Cream earning both ‘Best Buy’ and ‘Great Value’ from Which? – beating far pricier rivals – is the ultimate seal of approval.

"It shows you don’t have to compromise on quality or flavour to stay on budget this summer. A big win for shoppers, who can enjoy a truly indulgent treat at an unbeatable price.”
