Embattled U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner has officially withdrawn from the race in Maine, which frees the state’s Democratic Party to name a replacement on the ballot for November’s general election.
He shared the news on social media on Friday afternoon, saying that by submitting his letter withdrawing from the race, “I seek to further the movement we have built together and the future we believe in.”

A spokeswoman for the Maine Department of the Secretary of State, which oversees the state’s elections, confirmed receiving a formal notice from Platner withdrawing from the race as well.
Platner suspended his campaign earlier this week but didn’t say when he’d file the paperwork to withdraw from the general election ballot and demanded that the process of replacing him reflect the voters who had propelled him to an unlikely nomination.
Platner’s withdrawal came days after a woman he’d dated said in interviews that Platner drunkenly forced her to have sex after she told him to stop. Platner has repeatedly denied the allegation, first made in an interview with Politico.
For Democrats to reclaim the Senate majority, the party will likely have to win in Maine, where the incumbent Republican, Sen. Susan Collins, has defeated many challengers before. State law allows Platner to be replaced on the ballot if he withdraws by July 13. The replacement candidate must be named by July 27, leaving the party little time to find a replacement.
The Maine Democratic Party plans to hold a nominating convention to replace Platner on the ballot.
