Daniel Danker on how Walmart solves customer problems with AI

Дата публикации: 18-06-2026 11:00:00

While some companies are still exploring AI, Daniel Danker cites where it’s already working at Walmart. “We see it as the technology to solve a bunch of problems for customers,” says Danker, the retail giant’s executive vice president for AI acceleration.
Walmart has deployed tools like its Sparky assistant, which answers product questions and helps customers navigate the store, along with partnerships that support shopping through OpenAI and Google AI platforms. But Danker says those consumer-facing efforts are just the tip of the iceberg. Walmart also uses artificial intelligence behind the scenes to help store associates prioritize duties. The system uses Walmart’s vast data to route employees to needed tasks, especially urgent work like restocking sold-out items and addressing spills.
Other AI technology enables experiences like Sam’s Club Scan & Go, where members pay for merchandise through their phones, skipping checkout lines. For online clothes shopping, AI features allow customers to see what different outfits will look like on their bodies without needing to physically try them on (and potentially return them). AI even helps intelligently lay out pallets of merchandise for quicker loading onto store shelves.
Based in San Francisco, the AI capital, Danker spends plenty of time at Walmart headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, and coordinating with Walmart business units around the world. Danker, who previously launched products like Facebook Live as product director for video at Facebook, says AI is helping Walmart deliver new projects faster than ever. But part of his role still involves figuring out what to build next. Even with AI momentum, Danker says the list of ideas for AI deployments is “as long as our arms,” which means his team won’t be taking their feet off the gas.
