Rory McIlroy can't seem to catch a break at the Open Championship in in Royal Troon.

After finishing seven over par on Thursday, McIlroy returned to the course on Friday hoping not to miss the cut. 

However, things did not resume how the Northern Irishman had hoped as he clings onto a thin thread in the tournament. 

After his ball landed on a thick patch of grass, McIlroy's chip attempt resulted in a blooper reel-worthy clip. Rather than getting out of the rough, McIlroy's swing got the ball to skip just a few yards in front of him - essentially leaving him in the same spot. 

'Oh man, that maybe went five yards,' the broadcast crew said after the attempt. 

Before the Open Championship, McIlroy was in a six-way deadlock for fourth place at the Scottish Open last week.  

Not long before falling to the famous postage stamp eighth hole on Thursday, McIlroy dramatically loss to Bryson DeChambeau at the US Open in North Carolina. 

McIlroy had the tournament at his mercy as he led DeChambeau by one shot. However, he had a par putt from 2ft 6ins and missed. And then on 18, McIlroy had another par putt from 3ft 9ins - which he also missed.

The cinematic finish at Pinehurst also came shortly after McIlroy shocked the golf world by filing for Divorce from Erica Stoll. After declaring their marriage broken and filing for divorce, McIlroy called the split off to settle their differences for their family. 

Stoll was recently seen on the course while McIlroy competed at the Scottish Open earlier this month. Still, his glaring struggles continue to take the spotlight as McIlroy has not won a major since the PGA Championship in 2014.
