Speaking candidly on the July 6 episode of his radio show, Ryan revealed that he was, in fact, invited to the huge Madison Square Garden celebration — and initially told Taylor and Travis that he’d be attending.
“I RSVP'd to go, and then Disney hired me to do the Fourth of July 250 special on the third and the fourth, so I had to cancel,” he said, adding that he initially had to keep his invite a secret from his colleagues.
After his cohosts joked that his invite was a “waste,” Ryan added, “I was kind of torn. I tried to do both. I tried to go to the wedding and to prepare for that show, but we started live on the 3rd.”
Ryan also noted that after he initially RSVP'd yes, Taylor was super excited. “The irony was, after I RSVP'd the wedding, I saw them at dinner at a restaurant. She was like, ‘Oh, it's going to be so much fun. We're going to have the best time. It's going to go late.’”
“I RSVP'd yes, I saw them a couple weeks later to confirm, then I had to cancel,” he said, adding that he “had no choice.”
“This is part of my job at Disney,” he said.
Several fans have since been left divided over Ryan’s comments, with some accusing him of having “poor etiquette” and choosing “money” over his friends by taking on the gig.
However, many fans jumped to Ryan’s defense, pointing out that he was likely contractually obligated to take on the job.
Similarly, as some people pointed out, Robert Pattinson was unable to attend the wedding because he was tied up with work. Explaining his absence at the world premiere of The Odyssey in London this week, he said, “I was working. I was shooting Batman [Part II]. I was shooting Batman this morning! Very busy.”
