FDA clears Thunderbolt for treatment of ischemic stroke

Thunderbolt, a computer-assisted thrombectomy device meant to address distal occlusions in patients with acute ischemic stroke, has received clearance from the FDA, according to a press release from Penumbra.Thunderbolt is the first computer-assisted vacuum thrombectomy (CAVT) technology to offer modulated aspiration, which can help physicians more consistently and comprehensively remove blood clots, said Donald Frei, MD, a neurointerventional radiologist at Swedish Medical Center in Denver.“When the catheter engages the clot, the system automatically modulates suction to apply stress to the
