Nurse hospitalised after wearing TK Maxx sandals 'someone else had worn'
A nurse has vowed to always clean new sandals that others may have tried on after blisters she claims were from her new TK Maxx shoes triggered a potentially deadly infection. Hannah Jones bought a pair of white and beige slip-on sandals from TK Maxx on Friday, June 26, to try to deal with soaring temperatures in the heatwave.
The 25 year old said she wore the £14 shoes for about 10 hours while out with friends on Saturday, June 27, and noticed her feet had blistered when she got home. Hannah says she put a plaster on the blisters and went to work on Monday but struggled walking as her feet became increasingly swollen.
When she returned from work, Hannah's mum drew circles around the spots to monitor the progress of the swelling on her feet, which grew 'twice the size', she says. The dental nurse said she woke up during the night due to the pain and collapsed when she tried to stand up.
Hannah says she was rushed to Glan Clwyd Hospital by her mum where she had an ECG and blood tests to check for sepsis. Doctors reportedly told Hannah she had cellulitis, a condition caused by bacterial infection, and that it could have progressed into sepsis if left untreated.
Hannah suspects the infection was caused by other customers having tried on the sandals before her as they did not come inside a box. TK Maxx have not responded to a request for comment. She had IV treatment and was discharged after 18 hours, now having to rest and keep her feet elevated.
Hannah, from Abergele, Conwy, said: "It was really hot last week and I thought, the weekend is coming up, I don't have a pair of sandals so I'll go and get a pair. I wore them on Saturday when I went out with my friends. When I woke up Sunday I had little blisters.
"They were a bit uncomfortable. They were just painful if I were putting a shoe on. When I went to work on Monday, I just put a regular plaster on. By the end of the day I thought, something is not right. They had gotten worse. Throughout the day at work, I was limping because it was so uncomfortable.
"My whole body just started to ache and I got shivers. I thought I might have just caught something over the weekend. I got home and my mum was like, 'you are being dramatic.' I told her I am not and it was her idea to do the lines around them [the blisters].
"I woke up around 1am and when I tried to stand up, I just collapsed. I thought I was going to get sepsis. I went to A&E. She [the doctor] said I had cellulitis. I didn't have sepsis but if it was not treated within the next two days it could have progressed to that."
Hannah said she was shocked to be told that her life could have been at risk if she had waited longer before going to the hospital. Hannah said her feet are still in pain despite being on painkillers and feels like they are going to 'explode'.
Hannah said: "If I had thought to myself that I am being dramatic, they are only blisters, I could have ended up with sepsis. It could have threatened my life. You wouldn't think this would come from a pair of sandals. TK Maxx is a shop that you go in and you try things on and put them back.
"A lot of people probably tried them on so in the future I would buy shoes that are in a box. It makes sense if multiple people have tried them on with no socks on. I just have to rest, keep them elevated. Stay off them as much as possible and take the [antiobiotic] and co-codamol.
"The pain is the exact same so it is looking like I will have to go back in. They are constantly throbbing and red, it's horrible. When I stand up, I feel like my feet are going to explode because there is so much pressure in them. How can they have swelled up twice the size?"
Hannah has now thrown the sandals in the bin and is urging others to wear socks when trying on shoes and to wash new footwear. Hannah said: "Wear a pair of socks when you try them on. You don't think to wash a pair of shoes when you buy them.
"In future I'll wash them and if they feel a little bit uncomfortable, I will be taking them straight off. If you think you are being dramatic, you are not being dramatic. Trust your gut. They will be going straight in the bin."
