Grande Prairie RCMP makes arrest in 2020 suspicious death

A Mackenzie County man was charged with second-degree murder following a lengthy investigation. Cheyenne Omeasoo, 23, died in her Mountiview Manor home in August 2020.

Grande Prairie RCMP have charged a 29-year-old man related to a six-year-old suspicious death on that city’s northeast side.

Sometime in the five hours between 8 p.m. Aug. 11, 2020, and 1 a.m. the next day, 23-year-old Cheyenne Omeasoo died in her Mountview Manor apartment.

As part of the investigation, RCMP issued a request for information from anyone who heard gunshots, who had security or dashcam video or who saw anything they thought was suspicious.

Following the years-long investigation, police obtained an arrest warrant for their suspect, a Mackenzie County resident, on June 25.

Amadeus Laforce was arrested July 3 and charged with second-degree murder. He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie court on Monday.

Two of Omeasoos’ neighbours remember her as a quiet and friendly young mother to a toddler and said they were relieved to learn someone was charged.

Grande Prairie is 458 kilometres northwest of Edmonton and has a population of more than 71,000. Statistics Canada measured the city’s overall crime severity index (CSI) scores in 2020 as being 172.68, higher than the provincial rate of 95.63, which placed it ninth among 237 cities across the country. The most recent data saw an improvement in the city’s overall CSI, now at 160.3.

The city now ranks sixth in Alberta and 11th among 230 Canadian municipalities on the index.
