OData Update or Insert on an Expand

Hi all
For reasons, I am trying to post/patch (insert/update) records using OData expand method.
OData supports it: https://www.odata.org/getting-started/basic-tutorial/ (go to Data Modification - Create an Entity)
Here is a screenshot of the relevant section
But I haven't managed to achieve this. I keep getting error: Cannot apply PATCH to navigation property 'MyRelationRoleName' on entity type 'Microsoft.Dynamics.DataEntities.MyDataEntityPublicName'
I googled the issue and came across this: https://github.com/OData/WebApi/issues/964 But the post is ancient.
Has anyone achieved this with AX OData?
