You only need three simple ingredients to cook basmati rice on the stove.
Should You Rinse Basmati Rice?
Rinsing basmati rice removes excess surface starch, which helps the grains cook up more separate and fluffy. Place the rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cool running water until the water runs mostly clear. Shake off excess water before adding it to the saucepan.
If you prefer not to rinse, the rice will still cook, but the grains may be softer and cling together more.
This method works beautifully as written, but here are a few simple ways to change the flavor.
These photos and instructions show how to cook a single serving of basmati rice on the stove. A separate tip below explains how to cook long or medium grain white rice for one. For ingredient amounts and full details, see the recipe box below.
How To Cook Long or Medium Grain White Rice For One
To make a single serving of long or medium grain white rice on the stove, use:
Add the rice, water, and salt to a 1 quart saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium high heat. Cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer gently for about 15 minutes without lifting the lid. Remove from the heat and let it rest, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork before serving.
Do I need to rinse basmati rice?
Rinsing is recommended because it removes excess surface starch and helps the rice cook up with separate, fluffy grains. It is not required, but it improves texture.
Can I use long grain white rice instead?
Yes. See the tip above for the proper ratio and instructions.
How do I store leftover rice?
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
How do I reheat rice?
Add a splash of water, cover, and heat gently until warmed through.
Can I freeze cooked rice?
Yes. Let the rice cool completely, then place it in an airtight container or freezer bag. Freeze for up to 2 months. To reheat, add a small splash of water, cover, and warm until heated through.
Why is my rice sticky?
Too much water, lifting the lid during cooking, or skipping rinsing can cause the grains to stick together.
How much uncooked rice do I need for one person?
Use 1/2 cup uncooked rice. It yields about 1 1/2 cups cooked, which is enough for one generous serving.

Add the rice, water, and salt to a 2 quart saucepan. Place over medium high heat and bring to a boil.
Once boiling, cover with a tight fitting lid and reduce the heat to low. The rice should simmer gently, not boil rapidly.
Cook for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
Remove the pan from the heat and keep it covered for 5 minutes.
Remove the lid and fluff the rice gently with a fork. Taste and add additional salt if necessary.
This recipe yields about 1 ½ cups of cooked rice.
