The Woodstock Impressionist built the seven-bedroom spread in the mid-1920s.

Paul Wesley Arndt captured Woodstock quite unlike anyone else. The late American painter, one of the Woodstock Impressionists working in the New York mountain town throughout the early 1900s, created incredible landscapes by depicting his surroundings in splendid detail. Paintings of snow-covered streams and winding roads weren’t the only things he made upstate, though.
In 1925, Arndt built a stone house and artist’s studio on Woodstock’s Library Lane. “Arndt was part of the circle of painters, many of his neighbors and frequent guests of his renowned gatherings on Library Lane,” press materials say.
The serene retreat is set on over an acre and a half of land that looks worthy of the canvas. A four-bedroom, two-bathroom main house sits adjacent to a three-bedroom guest cottage that was once Arndt’s studio. Period features can be found within both structures, but thoughtful updates make them suitable for modern living. The gardens, brought to life over several years by landscape architect Michael Trapp, are dotted with dogwood trees, magnolias, forsythia, and viburnum—an impressionist’s dream.
Classic Dutch doors open into the stone house where exposed beams soar above the living room’s original wide-plank wood floors and stone fireplace. The nearby kitchen showcases Siberian elm countertops, a backsplash of Cle tiles, and Viking appliances. Further in lies a dining room and a bedroom. Three other beds with leafy views are spread across the upper level, including a primary suite with a renovated bathroom offering dual sinks and a soaking tub.
Outside, the stone-finished patio includes an al fresco dining area covered by a pergola. A gravel path leads to the artist’s cottage. The living room features soaring ceilings, an original fireplace, and a massive picture window that overlooks the 100-year-old oaks outside. Further in are more contemporary touches, such as skylights and a Venetian-plastered bathroom by artist Anthony Chase. Another highlight is the screened-in porch with cathedral-style ceilings and yet more scenic vistas.
The property is a five-minute walk to downtown Woodstock and under two hours from New York City. The Woodstock Tennis Club and the Big Deep swimming area are also nearby, as are the town’s farmer’s market and the Ashokan Reservoir. The $4.25 million listing is now available with Raj Kumar of Four Seasons International Realty.
