Elon Musk is now the world’s first trillionaire. He attained that feat on Friday when shares of his rocket company SpaceX began trading on the stock market, opening at $150.
According to CBS News, SpaceX priced its initial public offering at $135 a share, and its stock soared in its stock market debut. The shares opened up 11 percent from their initial public offering price, increasing Musk’s net worth to around $1.1 trillion, per the Times.
Before the IPO, Musk was worth an estimated $813 billion and was already the richest person in the world. He grabbed that title from the Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in January 2021, after shares of his electric carmaker, Tesla, surged.
Musk, who is chairman, CEO and chief technical officer of SpaceX, owns 4.8 billion shares of the rocketmaker, worth $715 billion, as reported by Forbes. “He has another 350 million stock options with an exercise price of $8.40 per share, worth $50 billion, giving him a 38% stake in the company, worth $765 billion,” the outlet wrote.
Analysts say that a trillion dollars could cover the annual GDP of most countries, as only 19 countries have GDPs that surpass $1 trillion. A trillion dollars could also cater to the entire U.S. federal budget for several months, or buy every home in many major cities in the country with some cash remaining.
Oxfam has also said that Musk’s new wealth makes him richer than the bottom 46% of the world’s population, or a combined 3.8 billion people.
Oxfam America senior director of economic justice Nabil Ahmed said in a statement that Musk’s growing fortune represents a “new Gilded Age” of wealth inequality.
“Elon Musk’s rise to trillionaire status marks a new pinnacle of oligarchy,” Ahmed said.
Besides Tesla and SpaceX, Musk’s wealth is tied to other ventures, including the brain implant company Neuralink and the tunneling firm the Boring Company. Last September, amid reports that Musk’s proposed Tesla pay package could make him worth more than $1 trillion, Pope Leo criticized executive pay packages during his first interview with the media.
The head of the Catholic church said that one major reason the world was so polarised was the “continuously wider gap between the income levels of the working class and the money that the wealthiest receive”.
“CEOs that 60 years ago might have been making four to six times more than what the workers are receiving, the last figure I saw, it’s 600 times more than what average workers are receiving,” he said in an interview with the Catholic newspaper Crux as part of a forthcoming biography.
“Yesterday [there was] the news that Elon Musk is going to be the first trillionaire in the world. What does that mean and what’s that about? If that is the only thing that has value any more, then we’re in big trouble.”
