Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad has yet to pass his driving test after failing his theory

Formula 1 drivers are regarded as the finest in their field, with the extraordinarily rare superlicences to back it up. Yet that elite status behind the wheel doesn't always carry over to the everyday roads travelled by ordinary folk, as Racing Bulls youngster Arvid Lindblad recently found out to his cost.

The 18-year-old rookie, who has quietly caught the eye during his maiden F1 campaign, revealed back in March that he hadn't yet passed his road driving test — and things haven't moved on after he remarkably fell short in his theory exam. Despite routinely hurtling along at breathtaking speeds of over 200mph on a standard race weekend, Lindblad has still to sit his driving test.

The Red Bull academy driver marked his 18th birthday in August 2025, making him eligible for a full UK licence once he gets round to taking it. Yet even armed with his formidable knowledge of cars and Formula 1, he has struggled to clear what many would consider a straightforward hurdle.

During a chat with Will Buxton on Up To Speed, the Drive to Survive pundit directly asked Lindblad if he had passed his test. The young Englishman confirmed he hadn't and hadn't even booked lessons to get started. "I haven't actually had a lesson yet. I did my theory a couple of months ago," he said, before admitting he failed "by one.

"It was quite bad. Yeah, I was quite disappointed, especially because I'd started revising only at like 8pm the day before. So, I did like three or four hours of revision, which I thought was enough, because I spoke to my mate and he was just like, 'Yeah, I just turned up. I was like, 'Right, I'll do a bit revision, I'll be fine,' and I missed by one. I was like 'urgh! Rage bait!'"

Whether it is down to overconfidence or some other reason, it is a striking trait shared among F1 drivers who have failed their driving test at the first attempt. The most notable examples include reigning world champion Lando Norris, as well as former title holder Jenson Button.

Other next-generation drivers such as Mercedes ace George Russell and Ollie Bearman have also struggled to get through first time. While Lindblad is understandably tied up at weekends, he has managed to get out on the road with his mother and says he feels confident carrying out manoeuvres.

He intends to get to grips with the trickier elements of the test when he books his lesson: "Maybe I'm very naive, but my plan was to have a lesson to learn about all the - I don't know, maybe silly is not the right word - but the things that the instructors are very hot on," he added.

"Checking your mirrors multiple times, you have 10 and two on the hands [on the steering wheel]. All those sorts of basic stuff that aren't really actually proper driving, to make sure I'm on top of all of that so I don't get caught off guard. I was going to go to the tests.

"And in the end, I've driven still quite a lot on the road, because I'm allowed to with my mum. So I'm very comfortable on the road. I can park well and all of that stuff. So, it would be more just to learn about the small things."

Despite still depending on his mum for lifts around his hometown for the time being, Lindblad is making quite the impression behind the wheel professionally. He has racked up 14 points from his first eight races, notching a career-best seventh-place finish at the Monaco Grand Prix in June.
