Elie Wiesel died on July 2, 2016. During the CNN appearance, Elisha Wiesel highlighted his father’s lifelong commitment to combating hatred and indifference, directing a pointed message toward young people drawn to the Democratic Socialists of America and what he described as its “lies and hatred.”

“There is a way back,” Wiesel said. “It’s never too late.”

The elder Wiesel, a Romanian-born Auschwitz survivor, author and human rights advocate, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 for his efforts to promote peace and reconciliation. His book “Night,” a harrowing account of his experiences in Nazi concentration camps, remains a seminal work in Holocaust literature and education.
