Yet this darling of the period drama world has turned her back on the world of honey-brunette locks in favour of a wholly more edgy style.

The stunning actress was padding the pavements of London while showcasing her new dark tresses - giving her usually elegant style a punk feel. 

Far from being coiffed and styled, the Downton Abbey beauty's hair was tousled and worn in a centre parting, in a far cry from her typical red carpet glamour. 

She ensured she kept the punk vibe running through the look by pairing her new hairstyle with a battered leather jacket - a far cry from her usual florals and frocks.

So who is the former English Rose? 

It's Lily James! 

The beloved star of Cinderella, Downton Abbey and Pam & Tommy showed off her wholly new style with the jet black look. 

It is not clear whether the new look is for a role or just to freshen up her style. 

Lily has been known to be something of a chameleon with her look, most notably after starring as Pamela Anderson in 2022's Hulu series Pam & Tommy, based on the romance between the star and her husband Tommy Lee. 

The stunner morphed into the Baywatch icon complete with a huge blond wig, prosthetic bust and identical make-up to the stunner. 

It seems Lily's hair change took place in the midst of her Glastonbury recovery. 

Just days before debuting her gothic look, she was seen at Worthy Farm wearing her usual 'bronde' style with a flesh-flashing sports bra and shorts look. 

Lily has previously spoken about her personal style. 

She said: 'I work with my stylist, Rebecca Corbin Murray, to find an outfit that looks and feels right. It really is a strong feeling as soon as I put the right outfit on...

'We’ve worked together for a lot of time, so there’s a great synergy between us. I have to feel confident in what I’m wearing, and if I don’t, I feel so nervous, and I can’t walk out the door.'

Lily will be returning to the big screen this year in a reboot of 1993 thriller Cliffhanger.

She is also set to appear in Swiped, a film based on the life of Whitney Wolfe Herd, who founded online dating platform Bumble.
