A Canadian who has worked in the gaming industry for over two decades, Beck grew up on games such as Final Fantasy and Super Mario Bros. He specalizes in roleplaying games, but covers titles in almost all genres. His dream is to one day be involved in the development of a video game, but until that day comes, he will continue to cover the industry he's so passionate about.

When you think of remakes, it’s mostly games that don’t quite meet the standards or expectations of the modern day, but remain a classic. We have seen it in the likes of more horror games as of late, such as the Resident Evil franchise, Silent Hill 2 and Dead Space, but there’s also various others, such as Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid and Demon’s Souls.

Ubisoft looks to take a leap into this category with Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. While the franchise isn’t without its shortage of renowned games, players are slowly getting tired of the same formula over the years. The French developer is looking to revitalize our love for Assassin’s Creed with a remake of one of the best games in the franchise. Take to the open seas and relive a pirate’s life in this grand epic.

A More Immersive Pirate Tale

The story of Black Flag takes place in the early eighteenth century when players follow a pirate by the name of Edward Kenway on his journey to create a better life for him and his estranged wife. In order to achieve this, Kenway takes to the open seas of the Caribbean, looting and pillaging from the English and Spanish. This is one of the better stories of the Assassin’s Creed games, as Edward Kenway is a relatable protagonist who is surrounded by a likable crew.

Surprisingly, Ubisoft has gone the route of removing the modern-day sections of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced entirely. This was one of the more fascinating modern portions, at least compared to the past games, as it was very much commentary on Ubisoft as a whole and the development of gaming. With that said, we’re not entirely sad to see it go. As much as it broke up gameplay, we can immerse ourselves in the beautifully crafted world of the Caribbean and sea shanties without having to be reminded every couple of hours that we’re in a simulation.

More New Than Old

The structure of a lot of missions has been completely reworked. While most of them have similar designs to the original, a lot of the trailing or eavesdropping in missions have been removed completely. When there are some, they give the player the option to avoid it completely and engage in combat, finding an alternate way to the destination, such as finding a note on the target’s person.

Because of this, there are sections of the game that have been reworked to be included within cutscenes instead. The developers have created new scenes entirely to fit specific portions of narration to ensure those sections aren’t completely lost, especially ones that give more backstory to specific characters or events.

On top of that, there have been additional side quests added to Resynced, seemingly cut content from the original that expand the story of specific characters such as Black Beard and Robert Maynard. The latter is a much longer quest, spanning about two hours worth of content and even introduces new officers onto the Jackdaw that brings with them more advanced weaponry and skills. The newly added scenarios are outstanding additions that only help the narrative.

As for the combat system, it doesn’t feel like a lot has changed in the grand scheme of things, but a fair amount of its design has shifted. For starters, guns are less automatic in that players can hit headshots and break through entire defenses on most enemies, killing even tougher opponents instantly, all while looking down the sights.

On top of that, Edward rarely uses his hidden blades outside of stealth, with his two trusty swords being the primary tools of engagement. There are things such as taking someone for a human shield when an enemy fires upon you, but otherwise, combat boils down to breaking an enemy’s guard through either brute force or countering their attacks and then assassinating them. There’s little outside of this, and to a certain degree it gets tiresome after a while. Boss fights are more compelling, but they are too few and far between, not to mention they somewhat struggle with this issue as well.

It’s the stealth elements that retain a strong sense of enjoyment, although enemies remain relatively dull-witted. Edward can essentially kill an enemy from the bushes repeatedly, even if multiple enemies are searching and in plain view of the cold-blooded murder. On top of that, the changes feel like they're far less important, to the point we never really had to blend in outside the rare scenarios Edward is forced to learn how to do it. It feels there, and still has a strong core, but not as crucial as it once was.

The newly added scenarios are outstanding new additions that only help the narrative.

Finally, ship warfare remains one of the best parts of Black Flag, although one of the most challenging. With the addition of the new Master Gunner, we get more variety in a ship’s abilities, and at the same time, it’s lot more strategic when to brace for an attack and how you approach a fight. Bigger ships players will want to hit from a far and avoid getting volleyed from the side, while smaller ones drop explosive keys in the water to frustrate the player.

There’s a reason why this gameplay spun off into the unfortunate release of Skull and Bones, because it just felt too good to sail the Caribbean and fight off the British, Spanish, and in story-specific scenarios, the Portuguese. With the visual upgrades, the world has never felt more alive, and a fight in the ocean can feel spectacular, be it the wind blowing the ships around, waterspouts forming or lightning storms filling the sky. It’s much harder to see when cannons are being fired at you, ensuring you’re always paying attention because the Jackdaw can only take so many hits.

Visual Overhaul

Black Flag Resynced City

It’s impossible to get through this review without talking about the graphical overhaul Black Flag Resynced went through. Ubisoft has carefully redone the entirety of the 2013 game, almost redesigning portions of the world. The vast majority remains the same in terms of structure, but the developers have recreated the world with more modern visual expectations.

Character models look beautiful, although Edward Kennway somehow looks like the NPC in comparison to the rest of the cast. Something about his beard and eyeshadow makes him look less impressive than characters such as Black Beard, Steed Bonnet or James Kidd and it’s off-putting. This is during cutscenes, though, as his attire from the back looks highly detailed.

While the characters got a general improvement, it’s the world that got the biggest enhancements. The open seas have never looked better, as not only are the calm waters brimming with impressive detail, but the storms will immerse the player within this dangerous world. On top of that, while a good portion of the islands have a similar layout to one another, the vegetation is thick and luscious. Suffice to say, while Black Flag was no slouch in the graphical department thirteen years ago, Resynced is a huge improvement, bringing it up to more modern standards, especially when it comes to the user interface being more minimalist.

Closing Comments:

The remake of 2013’s Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is more than a simple graphical overhaul. It looks beautiful and brimming with visual fidelity you’d expect from a 2026 release, but the small changes in the core design and mission structure give it new life. Missions have been adjusted to remove most trialing or eavesdropping from its design, and instead much dialogue has been shifted into extended cutscenes and other areas. Unfortunately, the combat doesn’t make the transition as well. While Edward has a lot at his disposal, and for the most part, the changes are for the better, they can get tiresome after a while, and it doesn’t help the stealth doesn't mesh well with the new changes either. With that said, the ship combat remains some of the best, and the additions to it make it even better. While it didn’t necessarily need a remake, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is the best way to play one of the best games in the franchise.
