Former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been appointed as a global strategic adviser for an Indian-based global tech firm, sparking political outrage back home.

BLS International is a leading tech-enabled outsourcing partner that manages visa, passport, and consular services for dozens of governments, including India and Spain.

The company hopes to draw on Morrison's 'deep economic, trade, and commercial background to further its long-term growth vision'.

'Before and during his time in public office, his career heavily centred around market economics, financial regulation, infrastructure, and trade diversification,' the company stated in a media release last week.

'Mr Morrison has built a substantial track record working directly with corporate boards, private equity, and global advisory firms.'

The firm noted that Morrison was a founding member of the Quad Leaders Dialogue, an anti-China alliance with India, the US, and Japan, adding that he had 'elevated Australia's relationship with India'.

'Mr Morrison’s experience in leading a major nation and managing complex public institutions provides valuable strategic insight for BLS International, which continues to partner with governments worldwide for delivering secure, efficient and citizen-centric services,' chairman Shri Diwakar Aggarwal said.

'His guidance will further strengthen our long-term growth strategy, deepen our understanding of government priorities, support innovation in service delivery and enhance our ability to create value for both governments and citizens.'

Morrison described BLS International as a trusted partner to governments across multiple regions.

'I look forward to supporting and contributing my insights to support BLS International's plans for continued growth that will give governments better choices to meet the evolving needs of their citizens and international visitors,' he said.

Morrison's new role has already sparked controversy, where critics have pointed to his record in office - particularly the Robodebt scandal.

Greens Senator Barbara Pocock claimed that the appointment should 'strike fear in the minds of taxpayers and citizens'.

'Scott Morrison left the Australian public sector hollowed out and skeletal, while the Big 4 consulting firms made massive profits on his watch. Australia is still paying the price of Morrison's failures of public administration,' she told The Nightly.

'The thought that he is advising big consulting firms will warm the hearts of consulting profiteers but should strike fear in the minds of taxpayers and citizens who will pick up the tab and pay the price of poor-quality privatised services, based on our experience on his home turf.' 

Former Liberal party member Matthew Camenzuli posted on X: 'The only thing Morrison is expert in is betrayal. What an absolute disgrace.'

First elected as a federal MP in 2007, Morrison served as Australia's 30th Prime Minister from 2018 until 2022.

Following his election loss to Anthony Albanese in 2022, Morrison revealed that he was secretly sworn into a number of ministerial portfolios - without alerting the public - during the Covid pandemic.

He spent 18 months on the backbench before he quit politics in early 2024.

Morrison has since served as vice-chair of American Global Strategies and as non-executive chair of Space Centre Australia.
