A historically Democratic East Coast state is seeing a huge swing to the right with a growing number of its cities turning Republican.

Maine's staunchly blue base appears to be under threat as hundreds of towns and cities have flipped over the last five years.

This includes liberal hubs like Portland, which joins a list of 188 cities and 420 towns which have shifted to the right, the Bangor Daily News reported. 

By comparison, only 51 towns of 1,000 voters or more boosted their support for the Democrats.

Voter registration among the party also declined across the state by six percent, compared to a seven percent surge for the Republican party. 

Independent voters declined three percent, while overall registrations dropped 1.6 percent, the outlet said. 

Former Democratic Representative Mike Michaud blamed out-of-touch liberals for the wavering support.

'[Democrats] have got to do a better job and get their message out to the working class folks here and across the country,' he said.

Despite the decline in blue voters, the coastal state still remains primarily Democratic, with 45,000 more registered as liberals than as conservatives. 

But that might not last much longer as the Republicans have now become predominant in 16 counties. 

Like most of America, Maine is seeing the shift largely in rural areas. 

Aroostook has swung 12.4 percent since 2020, with Somerset, Washington, and Piscataquis counties coming in closely behind. 

Lewiston and Auburn saw Democratic voters decline by eight percent since 2020, the outlet reported. Lewiston saw a 10 percent surge in Republican registrations. 

For the larger voting populations, Madawaska had the most dramatic shift, seeing a 25 percent shift since 2020. 

The largest Democratic swing was in Castine, which shifted more than 10 percent, the Bangor Daily News said. 

The numbers reflect a broader pattern for the left across the country. 

Data analyzed by The New York Times last year revealed that the number of registered Democrats has declined in every state that tracks voter affiliation by party - a group that includes 30 of America’s 50 states.

The remaining 20 states do not register voters by party.

This trend was consistent between swing states, red states, and blue states.

The New York Times notes that explicitly, 'fewer and fewer Americans are choosing to be Democrats.'

The Times attributes Trump’s sweeping 2024 victory - including wins in every swing state and the national popular vote - to this trend.
