Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s wedding guest list has raised eyebrows for a number of reasons, but one rumored guest in particular has stirred backlash: Steven J. Demetriou Sr., a man with ties to an ICE detention center in El Paso.
On July 3, guests including Sacha Baron Cohen, Brad Pitt, Hugh Grant, Karlie Kloss and many more were photographed en route to Madison Square Garden for the couple’s wedding ceremony and after-party. Among the photos that surfaced online was an image that appears to show Demetriou Sr. in New York City for the lavish event, according to Page Six.
Demetriou Sr. is the CEO of Amentum, which, according to the company’s website, is a government contractor. According to The New York Times, Amentum became the contractor of the Camp East Montana ICE detention center in El Paso, Texas, in March of this year. The New York Times described the center as “the country’s largest detention center.” Demetriou Sr. is also the father of Ohio Republican Rep. Steve Demetriou Jr.
In May, four detainees at Camp East Montana filed a federal lawsuit with allegations about the “horrific” conditions at the camp. “Detained people are regularly subjected to severe beatings or sexual harassment by guards; squalid living conditions; spoiled and inadequate food; no meaningful programming or recreation; inadequate access to basic hygiene products such as soap, razors or nail clippers, outbreaks of disease; and limited or no access to sunlight,” the complaint read, per NPR.

As for Demetriou Sr.’s connection to Swift’s wedding, it appears he was invited by the groom’s side. According to the Akron Beacon Journal, Demetriou Sr. is the adoptive father of Kelce’s longtime friend Reggie King, who was invited to the wedding. King allegedly brought his whole family with him. A 2009 article about Demetriou Jr. attending West Point links him to his father, Demetriou Sr., and his adopted brother, King.
Swift’s fans appear to be divided over Demetriou allegedly attending the wedding due to the singer previously identifying as a Democrat.
Neither Swift nor Kelce has spoken about ICE or Trump’s immigration policies, but the singer did criticize the President in a 2019 interview with The Guardian. “We’re a democracy – at least, we’re supposed to be – where you’re allowed to disagree, dissent, debate. I really think that [Trump] thinks this is an autocracy,” she said at the time.
Kelce has never publicly endorsed a presidential candidate, but his participation in anti-national anthem protests in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick has led fans to think he is left-leaning in his politics.
