The iconic Emmerdale post office is going up for sale this month with bidding set to begin - but with a major catch.

Situated in Esholt, a village near Bradford, the property is very familiar to soap viewers for its use in the long-running ITV soap.

The post office has appeared in hundreds of scenes, becoming a staple landmark for the progamme.

However, the building will be going under the hammer this month after being put up for auction. 

Last month, local resident and Emmerdale fan Helen Myers bought the post office business itself.

The post office business continues under the new ownership and is on a six-year lease that will be up for renewal in 2031.  

The catch is that you won't be able to move in and will instead have to take it on as a landlord, with the premises generating an annual rental income of more than £11,000.

Emmerdale relocated to Esholt from the soap's original filming base of Arncliffe in Littondale. 

In 1998, filming moved to a set on the Harewood estate when Esholt's time as home of the show concluded

On January 28, the building will appear in an online auction held by Pugh, part of Eddisons, with a guide price of £200,000.

The online auction opens on 27 January and closes the following day. 

Auctioneers say the sale offers the chance to acquire a building with both commercial potential and television heritage.

Pugh director Will Thompson said: 'Esholt post office is not only an attractive and characterful building in a sought-after village, but it also has a special place in the hearts of Emmerdale viewers across the country.

'The business sold before Christmas to a new owner who is enthusiastic about running the post office as a real community asset for the people of Esholt - and the auction of the property itself is an exciting opportunity for buyers looking for something genuinely unique.'

It comes as Emmerdale recently joined forces with fellow ITV soap Coronation Street for the explosive Corriedale crossover.

The one-off event saw characters from both shows involved in a terrifying car pile-up - and not everyone made it out alive.

Coronation Street's beloved vicar Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) perished after villain Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) left him to die.

While Emmerdale killer John Sugden's (Oliver Farnworth) reign of terror finally came to an end, as he met his maker.

Ahead of the special, soap boss Iain McLeod shared his verdict on the shows' futures post-Corriedale.

He told The Sun: 'People love Corrie and people love Emmerdale and their distinct entities.

'They have their own tone of voice and their own sense of humour and their way of telling stories, and they wouldn't blend long-term at all. 

'I think it's brilliant to bring them together for this but no, there are no plans to do anything similar in the future.

'Sorry to be the killjoy, those of you who were hoping there was more.'
