The US Vice President has spoken about the powerful visit to the region in a new book about his faith
The US vice president said a visit to a North Wales tourist attraction changed his life. JD Vance has written a book, due for release this week, about "finding my way back to faith". Extracts from the book, titled Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith and published in The Sunday Times describe how, in 2013, he and his wife Usha visited the UK, a place Usha had previously called home.
He reveals in the article that upon arrival he almost wrecked their vehicle, barely half a mile from the airport, due to his unfamiliarity with driving on the left-hand side of the road. He also recounts their journey to North Wales and Caernarfon, where he explored the "extraordinarily old and beautiful castle", reports Wales Online.
He writes: "Its massive exterior walls have survived largely unchanged from the original construction about seven centuries ago. The castle sits on a small peninsula that juts out into the River Seiont. We climbed to the top of the walls and looked down at the docked boats jostling in the water and at the medieval town below."
"Our house in Cincinnati was built about 150 years ago, and people call it historic. At Yale, the oldest building on campus dates to the mid-18th century. This castle, by contrast, was already hundreds of years old when English settlers first landed in the United States. For nearly a millennium, young men had climbed the castle walls and watched the sun reflected on the surrounding water."
He continues: "People sometimes talk about the size of the universe and how small they feel compared to the infinite stars many light-years away. I had never shared that feeling. But here, on the banks of a river I'd never heard of, in a castle we selected as a cool tourist stop, I felt for the first time something similar: the scale of time, and how little of the life of the world we'd ever see.
"After we left Caernarfon, we stopped at a local pub. Usha was excited to introduce me to a 'full English breakfast', though we were in Wales. 'What did you think?' she asked me. 'Pretty good. But I don't think I'm going to eat this weird thing oozing blood'. 'No! About the castle...'".
"'Blown away', I told her. 'The coolest thing I've ever seen, and it's not particularly close.'
He then describes their visit to Conwy "which also had a very impressive castle". "And for the next six days, we did what young people do on a vacation: We saw the sights, we slept in, and we ate and drank too much," he says.
He explains their trip influenced their future holidays "to go to the places other tourists don't".
The Republican politician recounts another tale from his Welsh adventure. "Back in Wales, a couple of utility workers near a downed power line had stopped us as we walked from a pub.
"'We've never seen you two around here. Where are you from?' 'We're Americans, just taking a walk.' 'Are you on holiday?' 'Yes.' 'Not sure why you'd want to visit this place!'
"Hilariously, the utility workers were dedicated conservatives who'd read some of the articles I'd written in National Review. They were Englishmen living in the Welsh countryside who read American conservative periodicals. The world is a strange place, I thought.
"The gentlemen gave us some food recommendations and wished us well," he says. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox
