Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is an upcoming ground-up remake of the 2013 classic pirate adventure game called Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, which is among the most beloved franchise entries to fans. The new version is scheduled to launch on July 9, 2026, for PC (via Steam, the Ubisoft Store, and the Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S/X. 

A rumor about a Black Flag remake in June 2023 was surfacing when Kotaku revealed that Ubisoft Singapore, developer of Skull and Bones, would lead the project’s development. Ubisoft eventually acknowledged and revealed Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced in April 2026, setting a July 9, 2026, launch date. Ubisoft later confirmed that the classic version would remain.

Genre and Setting of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag

The open world action adventure game Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resync takes place in the early 18th century, amid the Caribbean’s Golden Age of Piracy. While hunting for the mysterious “Observatory”, the players take control of Edward Kenway, a charismatic and morally ambiguous Welsh pirate captain who gets caught up in the long-running conflict between Assassins and Templars.

 The new Resynced version is a complete remake rather than a remaster, according to game director Richard Knight, who previously worked on Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Mirage, and Skull and Bones at Ubisoft Singapore. It is built from scratch on the modern Anvil engine, first debuted in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows.

According to Wccftech, Knight said: “A remake requires significantly more effort. It demands greater ambition. Looking back at Black Flag, it plays well, but it’s aged enough that it inspires new ideas.” 

The contemporary Abstergo/Desmond Miles framing present in the original title has been removed and replaced with new “Rifts”, situations that are directly related to Edward and his universe. The team’s stated goal was to keep players immersed in Edward’s story rather than taking a lengthy break to focus on something else.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Features

Ubisoft has confirmed approximately six hours of new content, including new quests and expanded officer storylines. The core loop of Black Flag (piracy, naval combat, and freeform exploration) is fully preserved but extensively modernized throughout.

• One of the most significant structural improvements available in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is a fully seamless open world: players can sail to any island, disembark, and enter settlements like Havana without a single loading screen. The world is dense with points of interest connected by the open ocean. New features such as crouching anywhere, ziplining, and diving are also added. 

• Combat has been expanded with new parrying mechanics and increased depth with kicks and hidden blade finishers, revised tailing missions with a more flexible design to reduce frustration, and a trinket system offering optional minor passive bonuses tied to playstyle. 

• Naval combat remains the game’s defining feature and has been expanded significantly by adding unique combat bonuses, new secondary fire modes, swivel guns, and pets on the Jackdaw.

• Resynced does not lean into the RPG structure of recent franchise entries like Odyssey or Valhalla. The original crafting and ship upgrade progression is retained.

• According to Wccftech, a new shanty player feature has been added, where holding a button brings up a scroll wheel, letting players select a specific shanty on demand rather than cycling through 30 to 40 tracks at random.

• Ray Tracing: Utilizes ray-traced global illumination and reflections. 

• Dynamic Weather: Enhanced Anvil Atmos system featuring realistic storms, winds, and waves.

• Next Gen Support: Supports 60 fps on consoles, PC frame generation (DLSS 4.5/FSR 4), and tailored features for the PlayStation 5, including DualSense haptics.

The game is currently available for pre-purchase on storefronts such as PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Ubisoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. Currently, the Standard version is priced at $59.99, the Deluxe edition is priced at $69.99, while the Collectors/Flagship edition is priced at approximately $200 USD.

Instead of focusing mainly on stealth missions and city-based assassinations, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced expanded heavily into naval combat, ship upgrades, island explorations, and a pirate-based storyline.
