Sam Smith has admitted the one thing they miss about the UK after moving to New York to be with partner Christian Cowan.
Speaking of their new album, the singer explained on the Dish podcast: “I moved to New York to be with my partner. So the album kind of soundtracked the move from from England to America.”
They added that the album’s story begins with “the night before meeting my partner”, then taking listeners through “the first two years of meeting someone that you’re with for a long time”.

However, while the move was for love, Smith has confessed there’s one thing they miss about their home country.
“It’s actually one of the disasters of my life right now. It’s like I actually get sad sometimes,” they shared. Smith said they miss “proper” UK fish and chips, adding that even in London they find it hard to get the version they really crave.

Smith said their family is from Whitley Bay, and named their favourite fish and chip shop there as “Marshall’s”, adding it’s “amazing”.
They said they have lived in New York for two years, and that the city can offer a different kind of day-to-day anonymity than London.
Asked if they can live anonymously, Smith said: “I think you can. I do. I always feel like I’m left alone, and then if anyone comes up to me, they’re normally very complimentary, which is fabulous for my ego, instead of like, ‘Who the f*** is that?’ But it’s good.”
Smith said Hazel Eyes is out in August, and will be available from 21 August via Capitol Records UK. They have already released a new single titled “My Guy”, and described the album as the follow-up to 2023’s Gloria.
