Federal officials are offering up to $250,000 in funding to improve safety and health training for the nation's miners.
The U.S. Department of Labor announced the availability of the Brookwood-Sago Mine Safety Grants, which aim to help workers identify, avoid and prevent hazardous working conditions.
Administered by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the program focuses on creating emergency response and recovery training tailored to various mining environments.
The grant program was established under the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006. It honors 25 miners who died in separate disasters at the Jim Walter Resources No. 5 Mine in Brookwood, Alabama, in 2001, and the Sago Mine in Buckhannon, West Virginia, in 2006.
Applicants have until Aug. 31 to submit funding requests. MSHA officials will award the grants by Sept. 30.
