The BBC wildlife presenter writes an annual letter to Ant and Dec over I'm A Celebrity's use of animals in Bushtucker trials
Chris Packham has revealed his biggest issue with I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here.
The BBC presenter and animal activist, 65, isn't impressed with the programme's format because he feels that creatures are being exploited "purely for entertainment".
Speaking to Radio Times, the star acknowledged that each year he pens a letter to Geordie pair Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, who front the ITV hit reality programme.
As the programme is due to return to our screens for a fresh new series shortly, Chris will once more dispatch his yearly correspondence, reports Wales Online.
Outlining why he has chosen to communicate his concerns to programme bosses and the presenting pair, he said: "(It) reinforces negative stereotypes about [certain] sorts of animals, where animals are being used purely for entertainment."
Regrettably for Chris he has yet to hear back from Ant and Dec, but it's evident that won't deter him from attempting once more.
Back in 2023, Chris penned an angry letter to the I'm A Celeb hosts, saying: "I've tried to be polite but my patience has run thin."
At the time, he headed to X, formerly Twitter, to publish his forcefully-worded letter to the Geordie pair as he angrily labelled ITV's I'm A Celebrity "grotesque" and "exploitative" over its treatment of animals for entertainment purposes.
He continued to urge the broadcaster's executives to "listen to the voices of concern [and] read the writing on the wall" as he highlighted the declining audience numbers.
In 2023, ITV issued a statement which read: "We are always fully transparent about our protocols and we have a very strict environmental plan in place on the show.
"As a production, we comply with all regional and national laws concerning the use of insects, animals and reptiles.
"Welfare and safety is always the primary priority on any of our programmes, and at any Bushtucker trial that features animals, we have qualified and experienced animal handlers on site at all times.
"We inform the RSPCA NSW of all of our activities on the show and they have an open invitation to attend the site at any time."
The statement added: "We cannot stress enough that we have rigorous protocols in place to ensure that animals are handled safely at all times, before, during and after any filming has taken place, in compliance with all regional and national laws."
Meanwhile, Chris is preparing to present a brand new BBC science programme entitled Evolution, charting four billion years of life on Earth through five extraordinary creatures.
The show will spotlight animals including the bat, the peacock, and the kangaroo, with each instalment of the new series examining a different species' evolutionary journey.
Throughout the series, Chris also took the opportunity to consider his own neurodiversity within an evolutionary framework.
He said: "I mean, why wouldn't we be neurologically diverse, so that in a time of crisis, a percentage of our population would be better equipped to deal with it and more likely to survive?
"Neurodiversity must have been advantageous throughout the course of our species' history."
Evolution begins at 9pm on Monday 13 July on BBC Two and iPlayer
