While many teenagers are counting down to summer break, 15-year-old Ethan River Luescher is preparing for a college graduation ceremony.
Luescher is graduating on Friday, May 15, from Tarrant County College with an associate degree in applied science, along with certificates in cybersecurity and ethical hacking.
He is also still in ninth grade.
Luescher began taking classes at Tarrant County College when he was 12 years old. His parents even sent him to school with a note for instructors alongside his student ID.
“I never thought he would be in college at 12 years old, and to graduate this young, it blows my mind, honestly,” his mother said.
His department chair, Sandra Williams, said she was surprised when she first learned his age.
“When I was in my class, I said I couldn’t believe it was his age. I said ‘Wow,’” Williams expressed.
In addition to his college coursework, Luescher is working toward the rank of Eagle Scout and is a state champion in judo.
“At first it was very odd, you know, cause I’m really small and I’m surrounded by all these people that are pretty much just adults and older,” Luescher said.
His father said Ethan’s curiosity and drive helped convince the family he was ready for college-level work.
“We talked about it and said, ‘Hey, I think you can do this. I said you know you’re always curious, you’re reading, you’re always pushing yourself, and you always feel like you’re bored with school,’” his father said.
Williams said Luescher’s accomplishments show what determination can accomplish.
“I think Ethan proves that if you set your mind to it, you can do it, regardless of your age; you just have to have determination,” she said.
Luescher said many people are surprised by what he has accomplished at such a young age.
“They’re very impressed that someone so young could do so much,” he said.
He said he is now aiming to earn a bachelor’s degree before graduating from high school.
“That’s what I’m aiming for. I believe I can do that,” Luescher said.
