Flight operations at Delhi and Mumbai airports were disrupted on Sunday due to gusty winds and heavy rain.

Mumbai airport, which is the second busiest in the country, saw no takeoffs and landings for a hour between 10.15 am -11.15 a.m due to gusty winds and low visibility.

Thirteen flights were diverted from to Ahmedabad, Indore, Surat, Bengaluru, Hyderabad airports. Mumbai airport’s single runway handles 40-45 flight movements and one hour operational suspension led to cascading delays of over 40 minutes through the day.

Flight tracking website Flightradar24 categorised Mumbai airport as the most disrupted airport on Sunday afternoon given the scale of its operations and one hour closure. 

In a statement Mumbai International Airport Limited said adverse weather conditions, including strong gusty winds of upto 42 knots and reduced visibility due to heavy rain, impacted runway operations. 

“As per procedure, runway operations were temporarily suspended to ensure the safety of passengers, aircraft and ground personnel,” the airport said. 

Fifteen flights were diverted from Delhi airport between 10 am to 12 pm to Jaipur and Lucknow due gusty winds and rain.
