Recognising the time-sensitive nature of pharmaceutical shipments, Pharmexcil has also sought details of challenges in handling temperature-controlled consignments.

Pharmaceutical exporters and importers are grappling with delays and procedural bottlenecks in customs clearances at Jawaharlal Nehru Custom House (JNCH) Nhava Sheva Port, India’s largest container port in Mumbai.

The Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council (Pharmexcil) of India set to take up the issues with customs authorities on July 7, 2026.

The Council, an arm of the Union Ministry of Commerce, has received representations from several exporters highlighting difficulties in customs clearance at JNCH . To address these concerns, a high-level team of Pharmexcil will meet the Commissioner, JNCH on July 7, 2026.

Range of issues

The Council has invited feedback on a range of issues, including delays in assessment and clearance of consignments, excessive examinations and repeated inspections, unwarranted queries, and documentation-related hurdles involving classification, valuation and shipping bills.

Exporters have also been asked to report delays in factory stuffing permissions and issuance of the Let Export Order (LEO), as well as issues relating to amendments, duty drawback claims, IGST refunds and other export incentive schemes.

Recognising the time-sensitive nature of pharmaceutical shipments, Pharmexcil has also sought details of challenges in handling temperature-controlled consignments.
