Former Raiders and 49ers defensive end Aldon Smith has died. He was 36.

“The Raiders Family is deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Aldon Smith,” a statement from the team read. “Aldon played nine games for the Raiders in 2015 as part of a career in which he posted a remarkable 52½ sacks in six active seasons.”

Smith, the No. 7 pick of San Francisco out of Missouri in 2011, had a remarkable start to his career only to be derailed by off-the-field problems.

He was a first-team All Pro in 2012 and was named one of the top 10 players in the league entering the 2013 season.

Smith served a nine-game suspension in 2014 and was released by the 49ers after his third DUI in 2015.

He was under contract with the Raiders for three years, but was suspended for most of that time.

“Aldon proudly wore the Silver and Black, was respected by his teammates and will be missed dearly,” the statement read. “The thoughts and prayers of the entire Raider Nation are with Aldon’s family at this time.”

Smith made a comeback with the Cowboys in 2020 and signed with Seattle in 2021, but never played a game with the Seahawks.
