A popular pub has been praised after explaining why it won't be open for the England's next World Cup match. England face Mexico in the last 16 on Sunday evening local time, but 1.00am Monday UK time.
Pubs across England and Wales are able to stay open until 5am if they wish, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced on Thursday. The blanket extension means individual pubs do not need to apply for extended hours.
Many pubs across Teesside are opening for the match, with some requiring bookings. There are also many that will not be opening overnight.
One that won't be open is The Griffin in Thornaby. In a post on Facebook, the Bader Avenue venue said the deicision was made after careful consideration.
The post went on: "Firstly, we’re not a town centre venue – we’re a community pub in a very residential area. And while We’ve loved having a full pub for all of England’s games so far, we don’t feel it’s courteous or respectful to our many residential neighbours to have large numbers of people leaving the pub at that time in the morning.
"Secondly, the majority of our team also have kids and or full-time jobs here, and we don’t feel it’s fair to ask them to work through the early hours as well. Sometimes it’s not about the money – it’s about doing what we believe is the right thing in the circumstances.
"We hope you all enjoy the game wherever you’re watching it, and we look forward to welcoming you back next Saturday if England book their place in the Quarter Finals!"

People responded with praise for the explanation. One person said: "Great decision! Fully support. Wish there were more respectful people like you!" Another added: "Well done thinking off your staff and local residents".
One comment stated: "Great decision, people before profit. The Griffin is in the middle of a housing estate and is respecting staff and neighbours. Well done." A nearby resident said: "As someone who lives within site of the griffin thank you very much for this it’s greatly appreciated."
