An Essex school which has been completely transformed hopes to give 'every child the best in life' Christian Appleford arrived as head of school at The Ramsey Academy, in Halstead, in September, with a mission to give every child the best in life.
Since then, the school’s behaviour policy and pastoral systems have been overhauled after it was rated requires improvement' for pupil's attitudes and behaviour in an Ofsted report in September 2024. Now, the head feels the school is in the right place to update its identity with a refresh of its values and the reintroduction of the long-lost house system.
He said: “We have seen throughout the year the need to relaunch the personal development systems of the school to improve the joy of belonging here. I would have liked to have implemented this sooner, but it was essential to first ensure our behaviour and pastoral systems were firmly embedded, alongside a strong focus on teaching, learning and curriculum development.
"With these foundations now securely in place – and continuing to evolve in regard to curriculum sequencing – we are well positioned to take the next steps in enriching students’ experiences throughout their five-year journey at the school.”
Working in consultation with students, the school has developed a new set of core values – Resilience, Aspiration and Mutual Respect, forming RAM – to bring about a strong and distinctive identity for Ramsey Academy.
A new house system will be launched in July, with students allocated to Attenborough, Courtauld and Yousafzai houses – with the names chosen by students and the community to reflect inspirational figures Sir David Attenborough, Elizabeth Courtauld and Malala Yousafzai.
Going forward, students will have the opportunity to compete in a wide range of activities as part of their daily school life – including academic challenges, sporting events and tournaments, and creative, arts and performance competitions.
Attendance and punctuality initiatives, whole-school events, charity events, enrichment opportunities and community involvement will all contribute to house points, rewarding effort, participation and achievement.
Mr Appleford said: “The house system brings togetherness, rewards, supports healthy competition, improves student voice and inspires leadership opportunities while demonstrating the school values.
“We want students to be living the values – if they open a door for someone, we will highlight to them they are demonstrating mutual respect, for example. We wanted to relaunch the values, so they become part of our shared language every day.
“We want to strengthen students’ sense of belonging to our school, while continuing to support academic success, as we begin to introduce this exciting initiative over the remaining weeks of the school year.
“I am really excited. I really appreciate the support from students, staff and the community over this past year. It really feels like the school is in a different place compared to a year ago. We will be far, far stronger this September having had a positive year working with our school and outreaching community.”
The school, which joined Bridge Academy Trust in 2021, will keep its moto of Achieving Excellence Together.
