The public have been told to 'avoid the area'

A major Essex road has been closed while around 40 firefighters tackle a huge blaze near Clacton. The A133 is closed in both directions on Monday, July 6 while emergency services deal with the "significant" field fire in Weeley.

Essex County Fire and Rescue have confirmed around 40 firefighters are at the scene to extinguish the flames this evening (July 6). The A133 is expected to remain closed until later this evening and the public has been warned by the fire service to avoid the area.

Motorists have been urged to find an alternative route to allow firefighters to work safely and help to minimise disruption. It is unclear when the road will be reopened, but it will likely be closed for the next few hours.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix, said: "A133 in both directions closed, slow traffic due to fire services activity from B1033 Colchester Road (Weeley) to B1442 Progress Way (Little Clacton)."

A spokesperson for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: "Around 40 firefighters are currently tackling a significant field fire in Weeley. The A133 is closed in both directions and is expected to remain closed for the next few hours while emergency services deal with the incident.

"Please avoid the area if possible and find an alternative route to allow firefighters to work safely and help minimise disruption. Thank you for your patience and cooperation. We'll provide further updates when we can."
