In this article, we’ll outline how you can attribute leads & customers to SEO in your company’s CRM, and show you a few reports you can run to understand the ROI of your SEO efforts.
What is SEO attribution?SEO attribution is the action of tracking your leads, conversions, sales, and other user engagement touchpoints that came from your SEO strategy. It’s critical to understanding the performance of your SEO strategy. When you know exactly which leads, sales, and revenue came from your SEO strategy, you can easily understand your return on investment (ROI) and continue to optimize areas of your strategy that drive the most revenue.
Why SEO attribution is importantSEO attribution connects your organic search efforts to the leads, customers, and revenue they produce. Here is what that data does for you:
Imagine you run a pool maintenance company and are doing SEO, Google Ads & Facebook Ads to attract new customers to your business.
If you were using SEO analytics tools like Google Analytics to measure visitors, you’d probably get something like this:
| SEO | Facebook Ads | Google Ads | |
| Spend | $5,000 | $5,000 | $5,000 |
| Visitors | 200 | 500 | 400 |
If this was the only information you had access to, then it would look like your Facebook Ads and Google Ads were far outperforming your SEO efforts. As a result, you’d probably start to spend more on those.
However, imagine if you could see the results all the way down to the number of customers and the amount of revenue generated. You’d have something like this:
| SEO | Facebook Ads | Google Ads | |
| Spend | $5,000 | $5,000 | $5,000 |
| Visitors | 200 | 500 | 400 |
| Leads | 30 | 40 | 40 |
| Customers | 25 | 7 | 12 |
| Revenue | $45,000 | $8,000 | $18,000 |
Looking at the numbers above, you can actually see that your SEO efforts are far outperforming your paid ads:
When you’re able to track SEO and the performance of your various marketing initiatives down to the number of customers and amount of revenue generated, you’re able to get the full picture of how they are performing and can allocate your budget accordingly. It also helps you prove the value of SEO and your other digital marketing campaigns to leadership.

An attribution model decides which touchpoints get credit when someone becomes a lead or customer. Organic search rarely works alone, so the model you choose changes how much value SEO appears to deliver.
Now that you know the different SEO attribution models, let’s get into how to track it. Tracking SEO attribution takes more than one tool. Here are a couple of different methods to track SEO attribution:
1. Set up conversion tracking in Google Analytics 4Start by marking your important actions, such as form submissions and phone calls, as key events in Google Analytics 4 (GA4). Then filter your reports to the Organic Search channel and break the data down by landing page. You will see which pages bring in organic visitors who take those actions.
GA4 counts sessions and events, so it can’t tell you which named lead became a customer. Treat it as your first layer of data.
2. Pull query data from Google Search ConsoleGoogle Search Console shows impressions, clicks, and average position for every query and page on your site. Compare those numbers with your GA4 landing page data to connect a ranking change to a change in conversions. For example, a page that climbs from the second page of results to the first should show a matching lift in organic sessions and key events.
Search Console stops at the click. It can’t follow a visitor through a form or a sales process.
3. Capture the source with hidden form fieldsHidden fields give every lead a permanent record of where it came from. A tool like Attributer saves the visit source in the visitor’s browser, then writes it into hidden fields when that person submits your form. The search engine, landing page, and channel arrive in your inbox or CRM right next to the lead’s name and email, as covered in the Attributer steps above.
4. Report on leads, customers, and revenue in your CRMOnce the source data sits in your customer relationship management (CRM) system, you can build reports that connect organic search to closed deals. Match each lead to its deal stage, then count the leads, customers, and revenue tied to the organic channel. Make sure your team uses the same channel names every time, because inconsistent labels split your organic results across several categories.
5. Ask new leads how they found youAdd an open text field such as “How did you hear about us?” to your forms and intake calls. Self-reported answers catch influence that tracking misses, like a person who researched your business in an AI search tool and later typed your URL straight into the browser. Compare those answers with your tracked data to spot gaps.
Challenges of tracking SEO attributionEven a well-built tracking setup leaves gaps. Three challenges cause many of the blind spots you will see in your data.
When you start to track how many leads & customers you are getting from your SEO efforts, you’re able to measure how much return on investment you are getting and if it’s better or worse than other marketing initiatives like Google Ads and Facebook Ads.
And knowing that can help you make better decisions about how to spend your marketing budget to grow your business.
