I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: when it comes to handbags, bigger really is better. The ‘ludicrously capacious bag’ is back for autumn, and I, for one, couldn’t be happier. Give me a handbag that can fit my laptop, water bottle and all the various bits and pieces that seem to accumulate at the bottom of my bag throughout the week, and I’m sold. And with autumn officially here, the trend shows no signs of slowing down.

One high-street name that seems to have got the memo? John Lewis. The retailer’s Intentional Tote Bag was one of the more talked-about handbag launches of spring/summer 2026, selling out just three weeks after it first landed. Now, it’s back for autumn, with a few updates that make it particularly well suited to the new season – and, if you ask me, it’s a rather convincing argument for investing in a maxi tote.

The appeal is fairly straightforward. With its oversized, slouchy silhouette, the bag has that effortlessly chic quality that makes even the simplest outfit feel a little more considered. Think your favourite straight-leg jeans, a chunky knit and a pair of loafers, with a generously sized leather tote thrown over your shoulder. It’s the sort of everyday uniform I find myself gravitating towards as the weather cools, and a roomy bag is a practical finishing touch that doesn't compromise on style.

For autumn/winter 2026, the original design returns with updated detailing, including a ribbed gold clasp and structural panelling, alongside a new chocolate colourway that feels particularly timely. While black will always have its place in my wardrobe, there's something about rich, dark brown accessories that makes them feel especially appealing this time of year.

If you prefer something a little smaller, the collection also introduces a mini shoulder bag in two suede shades: dark stone and hunting green. The stone version has already seen sales rise by 185% week on week, suggesting that the appetite for the collection extends beyond its oversized original.

The other good news? John Lewis has taken 20% off selected seasonal handbag styles until 19 October, bringing the maxi leather tote down from £149 to £119.20. It's still an investment, of course, but if you've been looking for a versatile everyday bag that can carry considerably more than your phone and purse, this one is worth a closer look.
