On August 17, 2026, Tesla officially announced the launch date for its long-awaited Cybercab in the US. Tesla originally unveiled the Cybercab at its We Robot event, held on October 10, 2024, at the Warner Bros. studio lot in Burbank, California.
Now, almost two years after its original announcement, the Tesla Cybercab is preparing to launch today, September 3, 2026. Lots of Tesla fans in the US are already super hyped about this launch, with some even getting the opportunity to book rides with the Cybercab ahead of the launch event.
In June 2026, Tesla began testing the Cybercab production version on private roads in the US. Clearly, this launch has been in the works for months and is now coming to compete with major taxi providers like Waymo and Zoox; now let’s have a closer look at what to expect.
Showcased Tesla Cybercab by ElectrekTesla Cybercab Is Here After Almost Two Years Of DelayOver the past few years, the autonomous driving industry has grown significantly, with more automobile manufacturers enabling Full Self-Driving (FSD) across their vehicle offerings.
Some firms like Zoox, Waymo, and Uber offer autonomous ride-hailing services, meaning users can hail a ride that relies on an autonomous system to take them to their destination.
The Tesla Cybercab was born on the same premise as these ride-hailing services. With these services, Tesla plans to give its users access to its own autonomous ride-hailing service.
However, it has taken Tesla almost two years to bring this service to users, putting it behind the competition like Waymo, which has seen incredible growth since its inception. One major reason for Tesla’s delay in readying its Cybercab for public use is its FSD system.

Texas Welcomes The Tesla CybercabThe Cybercab launch later today won’t be the first time Tesla shows off this vehicle to the public. In fact, some living in the US have seen this vehicle in use on the road by Tesla employees.
Taking to X a few days ago, a user named Sophia shared a video of a ton of Cybercabs in a parking lot. Yesterday, Elon Musk also made a post that reads “A Storm of Cybercabs,” giving a hint to the arrival of the autonomous driving vehicle.
Sawyer Merritt also shared a video on X of various Cybercabs conveying passengers around the city of Austin, Texas. The upcoming Cybercab will be part of the Tesla Robotaxi service, which launched on June 22, 2025, and has been growing since.
Through this service, users can currently hail a ride in a Tesla Model Y, which will rely on Tesla’s FSD to take them to their desired destination. For now, this service is limited to Austin, Texas, and only offers the Model Y.
However, following today’s launch event, the Tesla Cybercab will become available to Robotaxi users. Tesla has already added the Cybercab to its terms of service on the Robotaxi app, which restricts minors under 13 from using the Cybercab and minors under 8 from using the Model Y.
Tesla Steps Up To The CompetitionRepresentational image based on an official image | TechgenyzWith the launch of the Cybercab, Tesla is preparing to compete with Waymo and Zoox in the US. In comparison with these firms, the Cybercab offers users the opportunity to travel in a more stylish ride.
The Cybercab can carry two passengers and features butterfly doors. While Zoox and Waymo aaren’tas stylish, they can carry more passengers than the Cybercab.
Tesla is tackling this by also offering its larger Model Y, which can carry more passengers, as part of its Robotaxi service. Once the Cybercab is available for public use, we will see how this competition unfolds.

The launch of Tesla Cybercab is an important part of Tesla’sautonomous driving ambitions. While it was first unveiled in October 2024, it is now ready for launch. Tesla tested and sighted the Cybercab in Texas for months. The Cybercab will now join Tesla’s Robotaxi service in Austin, where Model Y vehicles currently provide autonomous rides.
While more autonomous vehicles are on the market, Cybercab is ready to compete with Waymo and Zoox with a different approach: a two-passenger cabin and a dedicated autonomous design.
