Powerful gust of wind in San Clemente determined to be straight-line winds, not tornado

Дата публикации: 22-10-2026 13:11:57

Weather officials were investigating a possible tornado in San Clemente as a strong October storm brought periods of heavy rain across Southern California on Thursday.
After the National Weather Service said its San Diego office sent a team to survey a possible tornado reported at the San Clemente Golf Course, the NWS determined it was not a tornado and is calling it straight-line winds.
Officials said they received a report that a tree may have been damaged by the phenomenon. While the report was received around noon Thursday, officials were not certain when the tree may have been struck.

People who live between the area and the ocean say the strong winds ripped through their neighborhood, with one man saying he stood in the center of his home because he thought the windows were going to break.
Tim Brown, who lives in San Clemente, was golfing around 6 p.m., just as the straight-line winds swept through the golf course.
“Maybe a 30-foot path it just carved right through here,” Brown said. “It had enough power, it blew down a tree and cut a palm tree in half, which I’ve never seen before.”
Another golfer named Mark said he has never seen anything or felt anything like it.
“It was a whipping sound, almost like a tornado or a water spout of something because the whipping was so intense and so quick,” he said. “It only lasted like 15, 20, 25 seconds.”
The NWS also warned the San Gabriel Valley could see a weak tornado amid a strong thunderstorm moving through the area. Wind gusts of 50 to 55 miles per hour were possible as well as half-inch hail, the NWS said.
“Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects,” the weather agency said. “Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible.”
The thunderstorm could impact cities, such as San Dimas, Glendora, West Covina, Pomona, La Verne, Azusa and Walnut.
Tornadoes are rare in Southern California but not unprecedented. About a dozen mostly weak twisters are reported statewide each year, including some in Carson and Boyle Heights.
The storm moved into Los Angeles County on Wednesday, bringing periods of heavy rain and raising concerns about flooding along the Malibu coast and in the Santa Monica Mountains.
A flood watch remained in effect Thursday for Malibu, Malibu Bowl, Pacific Palisades, Topanga and portions of the eastern and western Santa Monica Mountains.
Forecasters warned that heavy rainfall could cause flooding in urban and poorly drained areas, including streets, creeks and rivers. Areas near steep hillsides and recent wildfire burn scars also faced potential runoff, mud and debris hazards.
Overall rainfall totals from the multiday storm were expected to average about 1.5 inches across much of Los Angeles County, with 2 to 3 inches possible in areas where terrain enhanced rainfall or thunderstorms produced
concentrated downpours.
Along the coast, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms were expected to continue affecting ocean waters into Thursday evening, potentially producing lightning, erratic wind gusts, rough seas and waterspouts
A beach hazards statement remained in effect through late Thursday night for portions of the Los Angeles County coastline, where elevated surf and dangerous rip currents were expected. Minor beach erosion and tidal overflow were also possible in low-lying areas.
