Daughter of Mexican immigrants serves as bilingual doctor in San Fernando Valley

Дата публикации: 24-10-2026 18:39:16

Having a primary physician who understands her background and speaks her native language is very important to Viviana Nunez, which is why she chose Dr. Andrea Banuelos Mota.
“Because she is bilingual, and I feel she understands a little but more because she understands the culture,” Nunez said.
The daughter of Mexican immigrants, Mota is the very first physician in her family. Her father was a gardener and her mother cleaned houses.
“My parents didn’t complete grade school in their home country because they needed to work to support their family,” Mota said, later adding, “My mom once told a story when I was about 8 years old when she shared she really wanted to be a nurse, but she couldn’t become a nurse because she had obligations to her family.”
Mota was determined not to let the dream die. Through hard work, she received her medical degree from the University of Southern California and now practices at Kaiser Permanente in Mission Hills.
“It makes me very proud to have a doctor that is Hispanic because it’s hard for our culture to have those dreams,” Nunez said.
But Mota’s road to becoming a doctor has not been easy.
“I really find strength and motivation in my culture’s desire to do our best to keep going to reach as much as we can in supporting my family and being able to represent my culture in this space that I have chosen,” she said.
Mota, who also mentors pre-med students, is thankful for what she has been able to achieve.
“I am very grateful and proud of my family and my extended family but also my family here at Kaiser Permanente, which includes all my colleagues and co-workers and our patients,” Mota said.
