If I could turn back time… to 1976.
If there's one thing the fashion set has made abundantly clear over the past few seasons, it's that the 1970s are having a renaissance. From long sleeve tops and suede jackets to the return of shaggy faux-fur coats, our wardrobes are beginning to look suspiciously like something you'd find backstage at a Fleetwood Mac concert. And frankly, who's complaining?

Of course, bohemian fashion is hardly a new obsession. From Chemena Kamali's folk-inspired romance at Chloé's Autumn/Winter 2026 show to Etro's gloriously maximalist prints and Zimmermann's billowing silhouettes, the runways have been looking rather nostalgic of late. And while romantic blouses have typically been styled with floaty maxi skirts and relaxed tailoring, there's another '70s staple practically begging to join the party: flared jeans.

The combination is something of a match made in retro heaven. After all, few decades understood the appeal of a dramatic silhouette quite like the 1970s. Cher practically made a career out of wearing enormous flares, Jane Birkin proved that denim could be impossibly chic, and Stevie Nicks gave us enough bell sleeves and romantic blouses to inspire several generations of festival wardrobes.
For autumn 2026, though, the trick is to borrow from the decade without looking like you're auditioning for a Fleetwood Mac tribute band. Think high-waisted flared jeans worn with everything from long-sleeved psychedelic prints and exaggerated collars to romantic boho blouses, with a few contemporary accessories thrown in for good measure.
Whether you're drawn to the free-spirited appeal of Woodstock or the unapologetic glamour of Studio 54, these five outfit combinations make a very convincing case for bringing a little '70s drama into your everyday wardrobe.

If you're going to borrow from the '70s, you might as well have some fun with it. Think swirling geometric prints, ruffles galore, burnt orange, chocolate brown and enough colour to make your wardrobe look like a vintage record sleeve. Opt for a fitted, long-sleeved blouse tucked into high-waisted flares, allowing the denim to do the talking. Pointed leather boots and an oversized buckle belt finish things off nicely.

With dramatic bell sleeves and clogsThere's something wonderfully impractical about a sleeve that threatens to dip into your morning coffee. Still, the '70s weren't exactly known for playing it safe. Balance a dramatic bell-sleeved blouse with flared jeans that fit snugly through the hips, then add a pair of wooden clogs for good measure. I'd stick to dark-wash denim here to stop the outfit looking like it's escaped from a vintage costume department.

With a metallic top and platform heelsIf Studio 54 had a dress code, I'm fairly certain something shiny would have been mandatory. For a slightly more glamorous take on the trend, swap your usual going-out top for a metallic long-sleeved number, preferably something slinky that catches the light. Indigo flared jeans and platform heels make a convincing case for wearing denim after dark. A little disco never hurt anybody.

With an oversized collar and a bootsNot all '70s fashion was flower crowns and floaty fabrics. For something a little more rock 'n' roll, look for a long-sleeved shirt with an exaggerated pointed collar (the bigger, the better) and layer a slightly battered leather jacket over the top. Leave the collar sitting outside the jacket, tuck the shirt into your flares and add square-toe ankle boots. Bonus points if the leather looks like it's seen a few gigs.

With a striped knit polo and loafersFor those who prefer their retro references a little more understated, consider the striped knit polo. Particularly popular throughout the '70s, these fitted, long-sleeved styles look excellent tucked into high-waisted flared jeans. Add a skinny silk scarf tied at the neck, some polished loafers and a leather shoulder bag. Think Parisian vintage shop rather than a fancy dress party.
