I see Brett's point, "cut a swath" to me is different from "cut a caper" because there's an image of leaving a trail (as when literally cutting with a literal scythe) of things/people knocked down, either literally or figuratively. But the OED's editors for <b>swath</b> (definition not yet revised from 1918) don't seem to have had the image in mind of a trail, but only of a flashy display: "to cut a swathe (<i>U.S. slang</i>): to make a pompous display, swagger, ‘cut a dash’." ("Cut a dash" is unfamiliar to me.) Maybe the 1918 editors missed something, or maybe the usage has changed since then.
