Alphabet’s Google has announced the launch of a new Gemini agent designed for the workplace, in a bid to keep pace with competitors in the artificial intelligence sector.
The agent was unveiled yesterday (8 October) as part of Gemini at Work 2026 and is described by the company as “a universal agent for work”.
The AI tool can operate across a range of Google’s applications, such as Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat and Calendar. Key capabilities include prompt-based questioning, content creation and coding, among others.
It also claims to offer industry-specific specialisation with tools, skills, connectors and knowledge specific to professionals in financial services, as well as legal teams. Google said that versions designed for government, healthcare and retail sectors will be created in the future.
In a blogpost announcing the new agent, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said, “Gemini answers your questions, handles your knowledge work, creates your images and media, and writes and runs code, all in a single agent and a single API. You give it objectives, not instructions.
“You delegate an outcome and come back to finished work. For an agent to do that, it has to be connected to your personal workflows, your systems of record and your enterprise controls.
“Gemini can function as your personal assistant or as a team member, where it works on behalf of a group of people, like a project manager within a team, or on behalf of a specific role in an organisation, like an analyst in your finance department.”
According to Google, the agent can connect to a company’s enterprise systems, organise workload, access tools and return completed work to the necessary location.
The launch comes during a period of AI acceleration for global organisations looking to pull ahead and innovate ‘the next big thing’ in artificial intelligence.
AI start-up Manus recently announced funding of $500m just months after a failed attempt by Meta to acquire the organisation.
Fellow Chinese start-up Moonshot AI reportedly closed its final private fundraising round earlier this week and is gearing up for a much-anticipated Hong Kong initial public offering (IPO) next year.
In September, it was reported that UK AI infrastructure developer Nscale filed for a US IPO through a statement of registration to the country’s Securities and Exchange Commission. The Financial Times previously said that the company is seeking a valuation of up to $35bn.
