Relive Daily Mail Sport's coverage as Liverpool beat Villarreal and Manchester City smashed AEK Athens in the Champions League group phase.

Thanks for joining us

It's been a night of contrast for the English clubs - plain-sailing for Manchester City and a nail-biting thriller for Liverpool.

Join us tomorrow to find out the fates of Manchester United, Arsenal, and Aston Villa.

We've been Harry Bamforth and Luke Power, and you've been the reader. Goodnight.

MATCH REPORT: Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal

Lewis Steele at Anfield:

They used to call it 'Pep roulette' at Manchester City. A phrase coined by fantasy football nerds about Pep Guardiola's tendency to chop and change his front line every week to devastating effect.

We haven't refined our snazzy phrase for Andoni Iraola yet – the working drafts are 'AI Bingo' or 'Iraola tombola' – but the Liverpool boss has a devastating depth of attacking talent that, if they all fulfil their potential, can lead this team to dizzying heights.

That is caveated with a reminder that Iraola's Reds are simultaneously plagued by many teething problems in other areas and are far from complete. We will discuss that in due course but first, a word on Iraola's deck of cards that contains multiple aces and jokers.

With the best part of half a billion pounds worth of attackers not starting this comeback victory against VIllarreal, it was left to others to step up and no one caught the eye more than the potential world-beater but lesser-heralded Rio Ngumoha.

The Phil Foden show in front of 20,000 seats

Phil Foden has found the purpose that deserted him.

This was like seeing him in the good old days, when he looked like he was the future of English football for a generation.

Yes, we shouldn't get carried away. The opposition was AEK Athens. But he was the man who seized the night the most with his hat-trick.

'Rio was ruthless'

Rafa Benitez, former Liverpool boss, on Rio Ngumoha to Amazon Prime:

I saw [Rio Ngumoha] before, and to be fair today he was much better [tonight]. The last game that I saw him he wasn’t passing players so easily, today he was ruthless, he was cunning, and he was passing players.

You talk about his position on the left side and the right side. I think on the right side he can pass players wide, and if you go wide you cannot cover, so he can make crosses, he can make passes. Maybe he’ll score less goals but I think he can make a difference.

WATCH: Rayan Cherki's dash of magic

He's one of my favourite players to watch. The gift that never stops giving. He was sensational tonight and deserved his goal. Sometimes you wonder if players of his profile are going to make it in the Premier League. He's got practically everything.

Iraola: 'When we've been under pressure, we answered well'

Andoni Iraola, Liverpool boss, on Amazon Prime:

A lot of things happened today. They were much better than us in the first half, and we were much better in the second half. When we've been under pressure, we answered well. When we relaxed, we made mistakes. You cannot relax against very good opposition. I value the win. We have to know that if we don't go to the limit, it will be difficult. We are facing very good teams. It's good to come back, but we've started losing too many goals this season.

On Brighton next:

They are flying. Their confidence is through the roof. A similar style to Villarreal. They are second in everything after Barcelona. It has been a good game to prepare and we will use it.

On Rio Ngumoha:

I am really happy with Rio. He is trying to improve everything that we try to correct. He is playing a lot more on the right and he has adapted really well. He's going more inside. He struggled defensively in the first half. The second half was much better. He's becoming a more complete player. He's still only 18.

In the first half, they were overloading the middle. We decided to put Ryan [Gravenberch] at right-back and be more of a threat working with Rio. I value Ryan a lot. We decided to try a bit more one-sided, help more on the left. From there, we finished the first half well and started the second half really well.

What's next for both these sides?

Manchester CIty face a challenging trip to Aston Villa on Saturday and Unai Emery would absolutely love to spoil their perfect Premier League record.

Mind you, Villa haven't won at home in the Premier League since May, so they haven't quite found their rhythm there, and they're playing Viking tomorrow night so will get 24 hours less to recover.

Liverpool host Brighton on Sunday, which should be an absolute firecracker. The Seagulls are scoring a lot and not conceding very many at all - their goal difference of 18 dwarfs even Manchester City - so I'm not sure you can even put Liverpool as confident favourites for that.

Mac Allister: 'We will see what happens...'

More from Alexis Mac Allister, Liverpool star, on Amazon Prime:

When I say what I said [about the contract situation], it was more about my feelings. That's their decision and it's fine. I do my best and in the end, we'll see what happens.

On Andoni Iraola:

From the first day, I started seeing something. He's a nice guy, and the coaching staff is too. We are going in the right direction but we need to work and put in everything. Hopefully, we can win some trophies.

No place like home for Macca

Alexis Mac Allister loves Champions League nights at Anfield.

He bagged a brilliant brace tonight making it three goals in two home games in the competition this season.

In fact, all eight of Alexis Mac Allister's UEFA Champions League goals have been scored at Anfield. It's the most goals scored by a player in Champions League history with all of them coming at the same stadium.

Quite the stat, that.

It was yet another night where Mac Allister shone in what has been a comeback season for the Argentine. He finally looks back to his best after what was a poor campaign last term.

Should Foden play as a false nine more?

We heard earlier how much Phil Foden loves playing in the false nine role.

Now, we're hardly expecting City to rip up their system for him and sacrifice Erling Haaland.

But would you opt for this as a plan B more often? He obviously loved tonight, especially when he was switched into that central role with space to roam.

And he won man of the match. Is this the way to get the best out of him?

'Ngumoha's best game for Liverpool'

Lewis Steele at Anfield:

Rio Ngumoha maybe took a few games to settle into the season and new role. But tonight was not just his best game of the campaign but best in a Liverpool shirt. Unplayable and still, somehow, only 18.

The Rio show

Yep, we aren't stopping smothering Rio Ngumoha in praise just yet.

I mean, come on... he was just immense. It was truly the Rio Ngumoha show tonight, so you can't blame us for getting a little excited in the media - he has the potential to be a generational talent.

The stats say everything really. Ngumoha completed seven dribbles tonight, making him just the fourth player to complete that many dribbles or more in multiple Champions League games as a teenager.

He puts his name alongside the likes of Lamine Yamal (4), Cristiano Ronaldo (3) and Arjen Robben (2). Not bad company, eh?

Not just that, but Ngumoha is also the youngest player on record since 2008-09 to complete five or more dribbles (7), have 10 or more touches in the opposition box (12) and register an assist (2) in a Champions League match.

He loves a record, this lad. They just keep on tumbling.
