Social media offers endless ways to express ourselves. Increasingly, however, we express ourselves in much the same way.

Consider the modern fashion photograph. A coffee cup sits beside a designer handbag. An outfit is captured in a full-length mirror, or on a city pavement that looks suspiciously like every other city pavement on Pinterest or Instagram. A caption promises an effortless morning routine, a wardrobe essential or a newly discovered vintage shop. The clothes may be different, but the composition feels familiar.

Scroll further, and the formats multiply—“get ready with me” videos, seasonal wardrobe edits, unboxing clips, and photographs documenting a day in the life of someone whose life seems unusually well dressed. Even imperfection has acquired a style: the deliberately blurry photograph, the apparently spontaneous snapshot, the carefully assembled collection of images that looks as if it was never assembled at all.
