WASHINGTON, October 23. /TASS/. Donald Trump said he has the right to run for a third term as US president because the 2020 election he lost to Joe Biden was allegedly fraudulent.

"I think I have the right to run again because they cheated. They rigged the election," he said, addressing a GOP midterm rally in Iowa.

However, the US leader acknowledged that he may be barred by law from running again. "I'm not 100% sure, but I think the law says that I'm not allowed to run again. It says something to the effect that under no circumstances and for any reason will you even consider thinking about running for president," Trump noted.

By law, Trump’s second term as president is scheduled to end in January 2029. The 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, adopted in 1951, limits a president’s tenure to two terms. Nevertheless, the current US leader has repeatedly raised the possibility of seeking re-election for a third term. Steve Bannon, the president’s former key political strategist, also argued last fall that Trump should serve as president again.

Trump won the election for the second time in November 2024 when he defeated Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris. He previously led the US administration from 2017 to 2021.
