Tamron's 16-50mm F2.8 A Puts a Fast, Featherweight Zoom on Four APS-C Mounts, Starting at $529

Дата публикации: 15-10-2026 00:00:00

Tamron has announced the 16-50mm F2.8 A (Model B091), a constant-aperture standard zoom for APS-C mirrorless cameras. It is the company's first lens of this type to cover four APS-C mounts: Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z and Fujifilm X. The "A" in the name marks it as an APS-C design.
The lens opens at 16mm, which gives a full-frame equivalent of 24mm on Sony E, Nikon Z and Fujifilm X. On Canon RF's 1.6x crop it works out to 25.6mm. The full range is 24-75mm equivalent (25.6-80mm on Canon). Tamron positions it for landscapes, architecture, group shots in tight spaces and everyday snapshots, and as a "Go-To Zoom" for everyday carry.
Small, light and fast
Size is the main selling point. The Sony E version measures 3.2 inches (79.6mm) long and weighs 10.8 oz (305g), and the filter thread is a small 55mm. Tamron says the body is also structurally rigid. The Fujifilm X and Canon RF versions weigh the same, while the Nikon Z version is slightly heavier at 11.2 oz (315g).
The constant f/2.8 aperture is meant to give soft background blur and faster shutter speeds in dim light. That makes it a reasonable first interchangeable lens, or a step up from a slower kit zoom. The optical design has 14 elements in 10 groups and includes one LD (Low Dispersion) element, two molded glass aspherical elements and two hybrid aspherical elements. A seven-blade circular diaphragm stays nearly round up to two stops down from maximum aperture.
Focus, close-ups and video
Autofocus is driven by Tamron's VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor. Tamron describes it as fast, precise and quiet, with tracking aimed at unpredictable subjects such as children and pets. Tamron also pitches the lens for travel and everyday video.
At 16mm the minimum object distance is 6 inches (0.15m), for a maximum magnification of 1:4.5. At 50mm it is 11.5 inches (0.29m) at 1:4.8. That lets users shoot close-ups with the surrounding scene still in frame.
Build and handling
The lens has moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating on the front element. The exterior follows Tamron's "Toned Profile Next" design language. The front cap has a strap hole so it can be tethered to the camera. A flower-shaped hood, front cap and rear cap are included.
Early impressions
The spec sheet lists no optical image stabilization, so users will rely on in-body stabilization where their camera has it. The lens has no aperture ring and no control switches. It has a focus ring, a zoom ring and a USB-C port for firmware updates and Tamron Link support. On APS-C, f/2.8 gives about the depth of field of f/4 on full frame, so background blur won't match a full-frame 24-70mm f/2.8 at the same framing.
