Castor oil has become a popular social media remedy for thicker, longer hair, but evidence supporting its ability to stimulate hair growth remains limited.
Across social media, castor oil is frequently promoted as a natural solution for thinning hair, sparse eyebrows, and slow hair growth. Users massage the thick oil directly into the scalp or combine it with other oils, with claims that regular use can stimulate follicles, increase hair density, and produce visibly longer or thicker hair.
The trend isn't entirely new. Hair oiling has longstanding cultural roots, particularly in African and Indian communities, and oils have traditionally been used to moisturize the hair and scalp and improve manageability. What social media has increasingly done, however, is transform those cosmetic and cultural uses into claims of actual hair regrowth.

The TrendCastor oil is a vegetable oil derived from the seeds of Ricinus communis. A major component is ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid that has been investigated for anti-inflammatory and other biologic properties.
Its physical properties may explain some of the benefits users notice. Castor oil can coat the hair shaft, and research has suggested that it can increase hair luster. That can make hair appear healthier, shinier, and potentially fuller without necessarily changing the activity of the hair follicle itself.

Where the Hair Growth Theory Comes FromThis is where I think the piece gets particularly interesting.
Prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) has been implicated in androgenetic alopecia, with elevated levels identified in balding scalp. Laboratory research cited in a 2026 dermatologic review suggests that ricinoleic acid may inhibit prostaglandin D2 synthase, the enzyme involved in PGD2 production. That creates a theoretical mechanism through which castor oil could potentially influence hair loss.
But a plausible biological mechanism is not the same thing as demonstrated clinical efficacy.
The 2026 review noted that although ricinoleic acid's activity makes castor oil an interesting candidate for further study in androgenetic alopecia, whether modulation of this pathway translates into meaningful clinical hair growth remains uncertain.
📊 What does current evidence suggest about castor oil for hair growth?
What the Evidence Does NOT Support:
This is where the social media claim starts to fall apart.
A 2022 systematic review examined 22 articles evaluating coconut, castor, and argan oils for hair growth, hair quality, and other uses. For castor oil specifically, investigators found weaker evidence supporting an improvement in hair quality and luster but no strong evidence supporting hair growth.
A separate review of popular social media "hairfluencer" trends similarly reported that although castor oil is promoted for reducing hair loss and increasing thickness, clinical studies demonstrating hair growth were lacking.
The newer 2026 review is somewhat more optimistic because of emerging mechanistic research, but its authors likewise emphasized the need for further clinical investigation to determine efficacy and optimal use.
In other words, there is a major difference between making existing hair look healthier and causing new hair to grow.
Is Castor Oil Safe?Castor oil is generally considered well tolerated when used topically, but "natural" does not mean risk-free.
Rare adverse reactions including contact dermatitis and hair felting have been reported. The latter refers to severe tangling or matting of the hair and may be particularly relevant given castor oil's thick consistency.
Patients experiencing persistent thinning or shedding should also avoid allowing a viral hair-growth remedy to delay evaluation of the underlying cause of their hair loss.
The VerdictIs this a myth? Mostly!
Castor oil may make hair look better, but we don't have strong clinical evidence that it makes hair grow.
Evidence suggests that castor oil can improve hair luster, and emerging laboratory research involving ricinoleic acid provides an intriguing potential mechanism relevant to androgenetic alopecia. However, that mechanism has not yet translated into convincing clinical evidence that topical castor oil stimulates hair regrowth in humans.
For clinicians, the distinction may be useful when counseling patients who discovered castor oil through social media: enjoying it as part of a hair-care routine is different from relying on it as a treatment for alopecia.
The ScriptIf a patient asks whether castor oil can help grow thicker, longer hair, here are some important points to hit:
