India’s ₹10-lakh-plus motorcycle market is entering its first full festive season under a 40 per cent GST regime, with global manufacturers adopting contrasting pricing strategies. Kawasaki has kept its 2027 Z1100 at ₹ 12.79 lakh, while Suzuki has raised the standard Hayabusa to ₹18.99 lakh and introduced a ₹ 19.90 lakh Special Edition, testing demand in a premium market where annual sales remain limited.

The pricing divergence comes after the tracked 1,000–1,600cc motorcycle category grew 22 per cent to 1,105 units in FY26 from 905 units a year earlier, according to SIAM wholesale data. However, the higher tax burden and uneven sales across manufacturers raise questions about the sustainability of growth.

Suzuki’s Hayabusa dominated the category with 543 units, accounting for nearly half the tracked sales. Kawasaki followed with 281 units, more than four times its previous year’s 61 units, while Triumph declined to 159 from 208 and Harley-Davidson remained broadly flat at 120 units.

Festive pricing battle

Kawasaki’s decision to hold the Z1100’s ex-showroom price at ₹12.79 lakh positions it below Honda’s CB1000 Hornet SP, priced at ₹13.29 lakh. The 2027 Z1100 is mechanically unchanged from the model introduced in November 2025, with deliveries beginning on October 19.

At the earlier launch, Yutaka Yamashita, Managing Director of India Kawasaki Motors, positioned the motorcycle at the top of Kawasaki’s Supernaked range, emphasising performance and rider engagement.

Suzuki is pursuing a premiumisation strategy. The standard Hayabusa gets new dual-tone colours, a lighter lithium-ion battery, and revised electronics, while the ₹19.90-lakh Special Edition commands a ₹91,000 premium for exclusive styling, exhaust detailing, and a factory-fitted single-seat cowl.

Announcing the special edition in September, Deepak Mutreja, Vice-President, Sales and Marketing, Suzuki Motorcycle India, said, “We aim to offer customers an even more exclusive and premium ownership experience.”

GST overhang

The contrasting strategies come against a significant change in taxation. Since September 22, 2025, motorcycles above 350cc have attracted 40 per cent GST, against an earlier effective rate of 31 per cent.

The revision pushed the Hayabusa’s price up by about ₹1.16 lakh. Its wholesale dispatches subsequently declined 32 per cent, from 324 units in the first half of FY26 to 219 in the second half, although pricing alone cannot explain the decline.

Kawasaki also revised prices after the tax change and offered promotional incentives on selected models. Its earlier discounts included up to ₹1.5 lakh on the Ninja ZX-10R and Ninja 1100SX, underscoring the importance of tactical pricing even in the luxury segment.

Small market, big ambitions

Industry sources say the ₹10-lakh-plus market extends beyond conventional superbikes to include adventure motorcycles, sport-tourers and performance roadsters from BMW Motorrad, Ducati and other manufacturers. The 1,000–1,600cc figures therefore represent only part of the broader premium motorcycle market.

Import duties add another competitive dimension. Budget 2025 reduced basic customs duty on fully built motorcycles up to 1,600cc from 50 per cent to 40 per cent, potentially benefiting manufacturers dependent on imported models. Suzuki, by contrast, assembles the Hayabusa locally at Gurugram.

Ownership costs remain substantial. The Kawasaki Z1100’s on-road price in Delhi is about ₹14.56 lakh after registration and insurance, and maintenance, tyres, and spare parts further increase costs.

For manufacturers, flagship motorcycles offer strategic value beyond sales volumes by strengthening brand positioning, attracting showroom traffic and building enthusiast communities.

Beyond festive demand

Industry sources say organised riding events, track days, touring programmes and after-sales support are becoming increasingly important in retaining premium customers and encouraging repeat purchases.

The growing popularity of more affordable middleweight motorcycles also poses a challenge, offering buyers alternatives without the purchase and ownership costs of litre-class machines.

For Kawasaki, Suzuki and their rivals, the festive season immediately tests pricing power. The bigger question is whether India’s premium motorcycle market can sustain growth as manufacturers balance exclusivity, affordability, and a 40 per cent tax burden.
