Serial bank fraudster from NJ sentenced for trying to steal $30 million in ID theft scams

A serial bank fraudster who posed for photos with bundles of cash piled up to his neck was sentenced to 16 years in prison Wednesday for trying to rip off $30 million as part of his ID theft scams.
Laqaun Williams, of Florham Park, New Jersey, was sentenced in Manhattan federal court after he was caught with more than $2 million in stolen cash, more than 1,000 stolen checks, and hundreds of stolen credit card numbers.
Federal prosecutors said the 42-year-old Williams ran the huge fraud ring across New York and New Jersey from 2021 though 2024. They said the scam took place after he had previously served five years in federal prison for similar crimes in 2018. He committed the new frauds while on supervised release.
Images of Williams show him pressing stacks of bills against his face, piling them around his neck, and showing off money as he partied in nightclubs. The photos were part of prosecutors’ sentencing submission, in which they asked Judge Laura Taylor Swain to give Williams a long prison sentence.
As part of his scheme, Williams paid others to pose as bank customers using the identities he stole. In addition, prosecutors in the Southern District of New York said Williams was caught with two handguns with hollow-point ammunition.
One stolen U.S. Treasury check he stole was worth $14 million.
“For nearly two decades, Williams has been stealing money from innocent bank customers,” said U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald.
Williams pleaded guilty in September 2025 to the latest fraud charges.
